FACT-CHECK CLAIM: The Southeast Is Too Small To Contain All The Igbos

When discussions of secession come up, many Nigerians express the opinion that the Southeast is small and therefore cannot contain the population of the Igbo people. Some Igbo people also share this sentiment. But how true is this?

Today, we look at the size of the Southeast with respect to the population.

According to data obtained by The Guardian, the Southeast population is estimated at 22 million, living in an area of 29000 square kilometers. (That equals 758 people per square km).

We compare this to the population of Lagos which is estimated at 16 million people, living on 3755 square km. (That equals 4,260 people per square km).

Comparing the two population densities immediately reveals the Southeast is currently underpopulated.

Lagos, despite being smallest state in Nigeria and also the most populated, is filled up below 50%.

The Southeast is 7 times bigger than Lagos, with a population of 35 million. (If all southeast people move back to their region). This puts the population density at 1,206 people per square kilometers.
In comparison, Singapore has over 8,000 people per square kilometers and is a highly advanced country.

This means that the region will contain the entire southeast people and still have ample space for expansive forest reserves, wildlife conservation, and empty forests in up to half of the region.

In conclusion, the claim that the southeast region is too small to contain the Igbo population is false and highly misleading.

No country where that happens, just like all citizens can't come back to live in their country of origin. If you check all non Igbos living in Igboland including Delta and Rivers, it's almost as big in proportion as Igbos living outside. The idea tha t only Igbos live outside is just a scare threat which is not real.

People who have such mentality have never been to the south east before to see things for themselves they just sit in their rooms and write rubbish from their hate filled minds. Just travel through all the five states of the south east and see huge expanse of undeveloped lands in each of the state.
