JAMO84:Don't sound dumb. We all know that subsidy has not go but not the way tinubu went about it. Peter obi himself said he will remove subsidy but will be done in a more civilized way. Not the way that bat and criminal went about it increasing poverty, suffering and loss of jobs. Who removes subsidy on your first day in office without any plan. You removed subsidy then begin planning on how to reduce the effect. When you should have made an effective plan before removing the subsidy. Yet ignorant, tribalist dumb human like you will support such nonsense because you lack brain |

tamdun:The suggestion is that the government should do its job of protecting Nigeria and its commonwealth! Why is it easier to remove subsidies and throw Nigerians at the mercy of the dictates of the dollar than to ensure our refineries work optimally and block smuggling routes? If we are able to produce our petroleum needs locally, the dependence on the dollar would drastically reduce and even without subsidies, the price of petrol will not be as high as it is now! Or are you rather suggesting that the prices should remain high so that there will no longer be an incentive for smuggling? How long will you continue then to cut off your nose just to spite your face? Just imagine a female refusing to have her bath or maintain good hygiene just so that men will not be attracted to her! Make that make sense please?! |

Do you realise, most of these amount was actually borrowed? TBh, the was forward is a govt sponsored transport system, let the rich ride cars. How many poor people can afford a car? Please, let's be honest with ourselves |

That is purely the fault of the Nigerian ruling class including criminals like Asari and other politicians who have established refineries outside Nigeria just to keep exploiting this deliberate loophole! Did Europe ask Nigeria not to build or maintain her refineries? All the monies that have been generated and stolen in the past decades, why has this perennial problem of poor domestic refining capacity not been addressed? Even after taking out subsidies, I have not seen any move by the Buhari and now Tinubu government to revive our existing refineries or is the plan for only Dangote refinery to work and which does not appear ready to function even in the next One year? Where is the consideration for the welfare of the common man who cannot afford this exorbitant costs? ElSudani: |
Ask APC government. Buhari had 8 years, pumped billions of naira to fix PH, Warri and Kaduna refinery. Yet, none is working. You are still providing jobs for Europe after subsidy removal because Nigeria is still importing petrol. The civilian regime since 1999 is to blame because all of them voted money for TAM which was not done, where is the money since 1999 to date
|

lexy2014:When we subsidise fuel, it becomes cheaper right? We buy more of it. Right? We can run businesses. Right? - Because we're buying this fuel, EU who is producing the fuel, is "working" by producing the fuel. They have jobs to produce the fuel for us. - Now we're not subsidising, we are not buying much fuel again. EU refineries are not able to sell. They are not working. They will become jobless. - But we too are suffering joblessness, because no fuel to run generators to do our normal businesses. No work for us, no work for EU. Everybody sits down jobless. This is what 3 of us are saying, You, the guy you commented and myself. |

Its too late for first world countries to start building new refinery because the future of oil is getting narrow each passing day. Gangote refinery have swallowed billions of dollars which the refinery might not recover even in long terms if fuel is sold cheaply. The NNPC too has invested in that refinery which own one of the biggest share. The reason when NNPC is increasing fuel price and speaking for dangote refinery. |

emkz:You see that last bolded statement you made? I terribly dislike when people use that as an argument against subsidy cos it's patently flawed and devoid of logic. Last time I checked, the greatest mass of people suffering untold hardship since the removal of subsidy are the poor. It is not the rich or middle class who can no longer afford food due to the inflation; it is not the rich or middle class who can no longer afford that korope bus ride and are now forced to treck countless miles to and from work. By all standards of measurement, the poorest in society are most badly hit by the current effects of subsidy removal. A rich man who moves with a convoy of 10 cars may decide to now move with 3 cars, but how can you compare that to the effect on the poor man who now has to walk 10 miles daily cos he can no longer afford that rickety bus? In summary, everyone benefits from subsidy, both the rich and the poor. In fiscal terms more money may have been spent on subsidizing the lifestyle of the rich, but measuring by the impact of subsidy on standard of living, the impact of subsidy is most felt by the poor. |

The failure of the government to secure its borders, and waterways and implement effective accountability is a grave debt paid by the citizens. Removal of subsidy because proper accountability cannot be made. And we have to pay for it |

Does that make sense ? Why didn't they get the local refineries up before removing subsidy ? Must it be this way? |

emkz:What made you believe that savings from subsidy removal will be utilized to help the poor or the country? Has 13% percent derivative helped the people of Niger Delta? Until we get a good government, no savings will benefit the poor, unfortunately the APC and Tinubu won't deliver that change we seek. The best option would have been to block the subsidy scammers, arrest them and stop oil theft. Subsidy is not a bad thing, other nations still practice it. it is the only thing the poor in Nigeria benefits from the government. Let the poor breathe! |
