Niger Coup: ECOWAS name Abdulsalami, Sultan of Sokoto as envoys to Niger
He is accompanied by the Sultan of Sokoto Muhammadu Abubakar who wields enormous influence among the Muslim community within and outside Nigeria. In the team is also Alieu Touray, president of the ECOWAS Commission.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed Nigeria’s former military head of state, Abdulsalami Abubakar, to lead a delegation to Niger for mediation.

He is to be accompanied by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Abubakar, who wields enormous influence among the Muslim community within and outside Nigeria. In the team is also Alieu Touray, president of the ECOWAS Commission.

The sub-regional bloc had earlier sent the President of Benin, Patrice Talon, and the President of Chad, Mahamat Déby, to Niger to speak with the coup plotters.

ECOWAS on Sunday imposed sanctions including a travel ban and a blockade on Niger until the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum who was ousted by the military on 26 July. It also threatened the use of force and summoned defence chiefs of the sub-region.

According to news reports, defence chiefs met in Abuja. However, Mali, Niger, Guinea Bissau, Burkina Faso and Guinea were absent from the meeting.

cool Nigeria stand on Niger coup is in order because military coup is like communicable disease, once it is sustained in a neighboring country it spread to another. From Guinea within 2 years military coup happened in four ECOWAS countries. To make the matter worst, it is backed by Russia which means other countries are not save. ECOWAS must rise up and stop the spread.

Those coup plotters must not be allowed to stay in power.
The illiterates have no idea how to run a country just

I am very pleased we have some mature comments on nairaland unlike many of the kids here that will talk thrash all the time just because they hate BAT.

ECOWAS cannot continue to fold their arms and allow coup plots to rule. We will end up truncating democracy and having military heads all over Africa. People think it is BAT that is initiating the sanctions not knowing it is ECOWAS that have come together to make the decision. We must save democracy in Africa

But in truth this thing made Nigeria and ECOWAS in general look weak
Our army should’ve stormed that place immediately
They stalled that’s why Niger have mouth to talk
Imagine Burkina Faso and mail threatening a whole Nigeria. Chai!!!
Nigeria don’t have reps again

Diplomacy is always the first option.

Military intervention should be the very last option, if necessary at all

These are leaders Niger republic recognized and regard not one Mr Bala bala Blu Blu that is drools from the mouth. Tinubu is actually a thing of mockery in the whole of Africa and he should respect himself. If indeed we have a good president, will Mali and Niger even dare Nigeria in any way?

Just negotiate your soft landing and relocate to Mali and enjoy the money, otherwise you go collect wotowoto if you refuse to handover power.

Even if the Coupists step down, Nigerian army may enter Niger as peace keepers to monitor the transition of power. All I'm seeing is the deposed president will not return if the Coupists agree to back down. Interim government may be set up to conduct election and transit power. Ecomog will still be needed to monitor the situation

That guy won't reinstate the overthrown President, so i doubt negotiation would work if that's their aim.

Unless they ask him to conduct fresh Election for Democracy, which he may not Also agree.

Its a two way road, invade them or Allow them be.

But honestly, how does that affect Nigerians?

And you think that the remaining 7 corrupted countries in ECOWAS whose citizens are in abject poverty with parts of it fighting for independence, will invade Niger Republic? A country that can raise 5million soldiers, You are just a nuisance.

There is nothing like ecomog. Niger is a country of 26million people, and majorly fulanis and Hausa's, how many thousand Nigerian soldiers do you think will face Niger at full mobilization? Supported by guinea, Mali Burkina Faso, Chad, Algeria and Libya.
Most of you promoting this war are western pigs who thinks that Africans especially Nigerians are stupid like Ukrainians.

listen yourself. Your country exports uranium and gold to France for years and nothing to show for it. How long will you suffer before you gain common sense, it didn't work out for us, let them try and see if it will favour them.

Sultan of Sokoto is more proactive outside our borders than Northern Nigeria were bandits and boko haram almost finished, thanks to Buhari though who helped to reduce boko haram's activities.

Effort in futility, the current ECOWAS chairman won an election through the back door that's also synonymous to coup d'etat.
