Coup Plotters Deny Abdulsalami, Sultan Entry, ‘discussed’ At Airport by Curious345: 4:15am On Aug 06, 2023
Amid the diplomatic row, Daily Trust Saturday reports that former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar and Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Saad Abubakar, were denied entry into Niamey on arrival on Thursday after President Tinubu mandated them to have a discussion with the Nigerien coup plotters.

Diplomatic sources said they were restricted to the airport only, where they had a discussion with low ranking members of the military junta.

Those familiar with the matter described the development as “embarrassing and an affront” to Nigeria, considering the personalities dispatched by President Tinubu.

Both Abdulsalami and the Sultan are highly regarded at home and abroad. While the former is seen as the architect of Nigeria’s new found democracy when he handed over power to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999, the latter is unarguably the leader of the Muslims in Nigeria and highly regarded in Niger, which also has Muslims as the majority.

It was learnt that there was no serious commitment from the coup plotters during the meeting.

One of our diplomatic source said, “The ECOWAS delegation of Abdulsalami Abubakar and the Sultan of Sokoto were not allowed to leave the airport in Niamey when they arrived there yesterday (Thursday). Up to about 11pm they were limited to the airport. The picture in the social media was at the airport where they met in a small room with some representatives of the coup leaders.”

Another source said the emissaries had to return to Nigeria overnight without any tangible commitment as the coup plotters few hours later cut diplomatic ties with Nigeria and others.

“If it is true that Tinubu/ECOWAS special delegation to Niger was restricted to the airport and was received by low-rank officers, that amounts to a well aimed, deliberate and monumental humiliation of Nigeria,” said Dr Kari of the University of Abuja.

“It also means that the mission itself may well have been a diplomatic fiasco. It seems the Niger putschists seized the moment to send a message: that they could not be intimidated; that they would not let go the reins of power easily; and that they are ready for a showdown,” he said.

Impose the sanctions fully and Niger will be crippled.

The illegitimate military dictatorship in Niger must be brought to its knees.

The President from the minority Arab tribe must be allowed to finish his 1st term and then "sacked" from office by denial of a 2nd term in a democratic election.

That is the constitution of Niger Republic.

Nigeria must stand its ground that no illegitimate or military rule will be further entertained in any West African state.

The majority Hausa that are rejoicing and their cousins in Nigeria who are also supporting, would not have done so if it was a minority Arab military leader that toppled the democratic regime of any of the past Hausa Presidents of Niger.

For the 1st time, the minority Niger Arab who are better known for street begging with their children in Nigerian cities, have managed to build a political coalition that allowed them get to national power, then suddenly the Hausa/Fulani/Djerma gang up to quickly push them out of power with the illegitimate military coup that we all know would later handover power back to a civilian government that is certainly going to be Hausa.

Is it that they cannot stomach being out of power for just 5yrs that a presidential term allows?

Or the Niger people only started suffering now that an Arab is in power for barely 2yrs, but did not suffer for the previous 20yrs of Hausa and Fulani rule?

Bazoum, a member of the Arabic minority Ouled Slimane people, is the first Arab president of Niger in the country's history.

You are fighting for a minority Arab in Niger to remain president yet you live in a country ruled by a criminal Yoruba man just because a "minority" Igbo man is not seen as being good enough to be president. What do you have to say about that. What's the difference between Coup d'etat and Ballot d'etat. Tinubu has taught Africans that power is not served a la carte.
... and for those of you quoting me and spewing ethnic trash, I'm not igbo. Thanks,

He who must come to equity must come with clean hands, the world saw the sham and evil perpetrated by Buhari and APC to forcefully install Tinubu on Nigerians who sacrificed alot to vote in a preferred candidate but had their hopes dashed, you don't expect the coup plotters to regard Tinubu and his emissaries because they don't see Tinubu as a dully elected President . Now they are planning on approaching Obasanjo to visit Niger next but i'm too sure Obasanjo will decline sad

Rigging of election is a coup too. Any gofament that enters existence by virtue of rigging through electoral umpire is not democracy, but civilian dictatorship and certainly not a government and should be removed

What has the electoral loss of an Igbo politician in Nigeria, got to do with the illegitimate usurpation of power in the democratic country of Niger?

How is Tinubu the President of Nigeria a criminal? Was he convicted by any court in Nigeria or abroad?

The voters have a right to their democratic choice whether in Nigeria or Niger. And there are democratic and constitutional means to remove such leaders.

It is only stupidity that will make a person whose house is on fire dedicate so much time to solving another man's problems instead.

Currently, Nigeria is battling multidimensional poverty affecting hundreds of millions, harsh living conditions brought about by impromptu subsidy removal and the resulting inflations, loss of jobs from the losses incurred, high cost of operations and the impending exit of firms, amongst other long-existing problems that have been left unaddressed.

How a country with third-world problems will deem it fit to prioritize an incursion into another country, a move that doesn't resolve any of these or even remotely takes care of the Book Haram/ISWAP problem affecting states in that part of the border is baffling.

Spin this with emotion-laden narratives all you want; You cannot on one hand, condemn the EU/UN and the West for their incursion into our political affairs despite them funnelling billions of dollars in aids to Nigeria; then want to play big brother to Niger who we don't give a rat's ass about.

Some are claiming to be patriotic Nigerians that's why they need to defend Nigeria's territory and honour via a proxy war. Note that some of these people have passports of other country and are led by one who doesn't believe in one Nigeria. But it is me advocating for using Nigeria's resources to solve Nigerians' problems that is not patriotic.

Over 13 million Nigerians that voted for other candidates did not want Tinubu, but with his almost 9m votes he was the most wanted candidate by the electorate in a 4-way race.

As such the majority of voters did not want any of the losing candidates either.
