Things Will Never Get Better In Nigeria Until We Return To Regionalism by gidgiddy(op): 3:42pm On Aug 10, 2023
When you look at Nigerian history, the best times Nigeria had were during the times of the Regions. Nigeria had 4 Regions, all 4 Regions were controlling their resources, were semi-autonomous and progressed at their own pace.

In 1967, Lt Colonel Gowon used Decree 14 to abolish the 4 Region and create 12 new states, then followed this up with Decree 15 that abolished resource control. Subsequent military rulers, all from the North, subdivided the 12 States Gowon created, and tripled it to the 36 States we have today, in a well calculated move to make the North masters of Nigeria

This has created an all powerful and omnibus federal government that is holding the federating units by the neck. Producing the President of Nigeria has now become a do or die affair

There are over 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria and they can choose which Region they want create and belong to.

Theres no reason why we shouldn't have about 8 Regions in Nigeria, each one controlling its resources and giving up powers such as foreign affairs, immigration and customs, national defence to the federal government at the centre. Each Region developing at its own pace, and according to its talent.

Nigeria should go back to Regionalism, resource control, fiscal federalism and decentralised government. You cant be calling your self a Federal Republic when there is nothing federal about you

Nigeria can't go back to regionalism Imo State won't share it's gas with Enugu, Enugu won't share it's coal with Ebonyi.... Sustainable Nigeria is based on all sub nationals and ethnic groups working together

On a serious note. Things will never get better in Nigeria unless Nigeria allow Igbos to go.

Sense of reasoning is gradually dawning on you. Unlike the initial nzogbu nzogbu approach that has taken your region backward with your self-inflicted Sit at home.

Can you drum this into the ears of your angelic representatives who are saner than angel Michael since you know how to elect the best leaders?

How do you define regional border because of your past leader's penchant for intrusion into SS land is threatening

Don't you think state control of VAT is a step in the direction of regionalism as your 5states can pull resources together in the name of regionalism.

Seriously, your region together with the north is the region that has been a clog in the wheel of regionalism.

You can't go against State control of VAT, canvass for removal of state of origin, refused to form state police until you were embarrassed, and claim to develop Lagos and still be singing regionalism.

Is it not because of the thought of a presidency eluding your region that you now result to regionalism since it is clear that secession you won't get and presidency you won't get? Talk true

Regionalism seems to be our best bet afterall. But the way you conveniently jumped the real people that first canceled the regional form of government and went straight to put it on Gowon seem like shifting the blame if you ask me.

Point of correction, Ironsi abolished regionalism with decree 34 of 1966.

I believe that a better structured regional government that will give more access to regional resources and security control will be the best way to govern Nigeria.
The British was able to see our differences and structured Nigeria in the best form it has ever been. Unfortunately, that was destroyed by the Nigerian Army.
Tomorrow, we will be blaming Britain for our underdevelopment, when we have caused it ourselves.

Nice reply, the states have to become productive & be held accountable.

No accountability if not at least 50 Governors & 800 commissioners will be serving 7- 10 years without any option of fine, for misappropriation of Government funds.

But they control other sectors like agriculture & taxes etc? That is no excuse to defend lazy minded people in a failed system.

Give them 100% of the oil & gas receipts, they will just be bigger Failures.

Have you ever seen a leopard change it’s spot before? Their forefathers lied to them about the history of Nigeria and the civil war they know their region is responsible for all the mess Nigeria is today but Shame will never allow them to speak the truth that’s why they resort in blaming everyone for their woes. Some of them don’t know who drew the first blood in the war , who initiated power to be at center and refused to allow cessation clause all their problem is Hausa Fulani.
One question I ask them which they fail to answer is
if the federal government fails you and you blame it on ethnicity, what about your state governor who’s your tribe , senators, house of assembly members and local government chairmen who you share the same ancestry why are they failing you Also because if they ain’t falling their region would’ve been like Dubai but guess what it’s rather their community populace that plays the role of the government in their region in terms of development you can ask them if it’s a lie ?
it’s never too late to start saying the truth that’s when Nigeria can move forward.

Best thing that happened to Nigeria, the civilians under Tafawa Balewa had already agreed to a federal system replica of the United States model, but as usual couldn’t implement it, check your history how many states in the history of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have been created by the bloody civilians? Nil.

Democrazy in Nigeria by these criminal system, is just a waste of time & resources, as the great Fela Kuti said, as time dey go, things just dey bad more & more.

I know, the truth is a very bitter pill to swallow, democrazy, demonstration of craze is what we practice in Nigeria.

If not, why are things getting worse as time goes by? Name just 1 benefit of this useless democrazy.

It will take 109 people paid in full 3 years to make 1 law, that the military of 19 people, will pass 5 in 8 months.

Op, things will never get better with Nigeria until we all go our separate ways. We are not siamese twins. Nigeria was a colonialist project and it has failed woefully. Millions of lives have been lost keeping this warped amalgam together

It's not a must that we should stay glued to each other coupled with the level of hate and mistrust prevalent
exantly, it will definitely save more innocent lives if we revert back to the way we were before the brits lumped us together.

This is precisely why I support regionalism, under this arrangement, no one will cry marginalization again.
I would have prefer a total disolution of this country.
So that we can actually sit down and chart the way forward.
We are not the same, I don't see why we should be together.
