Today in History: Aguiyi-Ironsi was Assassinated.

Exactly 57 years ago today, Nigeria's first Military Head of State, Major Gen. Aguiyi-ironsi from Ibeku Umuahia in Abia state and over 200 Igbo Army officers were killed in a coup attack of July 29, 1966.

He halted an active coup and imprisoned the perpetrators. Yet he was murdered in the most horrible way. It's sad most Nigerians don't know about the true events that led to the bloody civil war of 30 months. I'm glad Gen. Gowon is still alive to see the real enemies of Nigeria.

He failed to bring the coupists who happened to be majorly his kinsmen to a swift judgement (firing squad) ;hence, the counter coup by Danjuma, Murtala and co.

The Nigerian military coup of 1983 took place on 31 December that year. It was coordinated by key officers of the Nigerian military and led to the ousting of the democratically elected government of President Shehu Shagari and the installation of Major General Muhammadu Buhari as head of state. Coup succeeds.

There was no provision for a Military Head of State in the first republic's Constitution, the same Constitution, Ironsi swore to protect with his life, on assuming office as Nigeria's first indigenous GOC.
