CHAPTER TWENTY NINE


"You know, I'm still surprised how you're more African in looks while you're brother is more white American. To be honest, I was expecting the typical biracials," Precious said scooping ice cream into her mouth. Deborah chuckled. The ladies were in a restaurant treating themselves to bowls of ice cream, chicken and chips.

"Blame mother nature. That's what is called the madness of the gene, that shit is all shades of sweetness, annoyance and mystery," Deborah replied. She's a svelte, tall, curvy, browned skin lady with a beautiful facial. She has a resemblance with Xavier.

"Talking about the whole science thingy, I heard you're studying Microbiology at MIT."

"Yeah... currently in my third year."

"So how is it going?" Precious asked munching a chip.

"Well, MIT is just being MIT. Stressful, demanding and tasking. That fück just drains the life force out of me," Deborah said and bit off a chunk of Chicken. She moaned. "Damn! This steak is good," she said in pleasure.

"I can't agree less," Precious affirmed. "This guys are good at it."

"Definitely," Deborah said nodding her head. "They really deserve an award for this shit."

"Yeah... maybe," Precious said and shrugged.

"So talking about MIT," Deborah said coming back on track. "The school is great, I love it. One of the best science and tech academic institutions out there but that's where the problem is."

Precious raised a curious brow.

"If you're in Rome, act like the Romans. If you're a member of the royal family, act like one. If you're an MIT student, act MIT... and I can tell you that such requirement is just exhausting," Deborah said.

Precious facial shrugged and responded, "That's life for you. You belong to a particular group, you gotcha act like that group." She shrugged. "It's not as if it's a bad thing though. It actually instils responsibility, maturity, ethics, values, orderliness and self consciousness in us."

"But one can't overlook the fact that, that can be choking," Deborah said. "You're a student of MIT and a lot is expected of you. Intelligence, grit, discipline, speed, skillfulness and what have you. Due to this, they mount so much pressure on you, make so much demands, have so much expectations of you and heap you with immense responsibilities. After all, you're an MIT. In as much as it's challenges and develops us... me, it is depressing and frustrating, I'm not going to deny that," she said with her American accent.

"Well, I get your point and I feel your frustrations but life in general is demanding."

"Pure truths and that's why we just have to buckle up and deal with the challenges and responsibilities, and as Xav will say, that's what make us sentients."

"I can't agree less."

"Talking about Xav, I love the intimate relationship you have with him. Such is not always common among siblings."

Deborah smiled in appreciation.

"Thanks," she said. "We've being like that right from when we were kids. Family first you know."

"Definitely... but how do you cope with his naughtiness?"

"Welcome to the club my dear," Deborah said and gave a hearty laugh. "Yes, my brother can be mad at times but that's what makes him sweet. It makes the whole relationship spicy. Xav doesn't love a boring relationship."

"Swears and he's so full of schemes. And the thing is, this attitude is one that makes him someone you can't get mad at even if you sincerely want to. You just end up seeing yourself being endeared to him. But all in all, he's a beautiful soul and a sweet heart, my ideal."

"That's the Xav charm but let me give you a tip about my brother. You can't wriggle your way out of this. The only way you can survive is to adapt and by adaptation, I mean getting use to it and returning the favours in heavy doses. With this, you won't be the only victim, both of you will end up as the victims by each other, from each other and for each other. That's how I've been able to survive this long with him. It's a jolly ride."

"Noted, stored and locked in my brain," Precious said doing the lock gesture on the side of her head.

"I'm curious, what's your alma mater?" Deborah asked.

"University of Nigeria, Nsukka. I graduated with a degree in Marketing."

"Any plans to go for masters?"

"I never thought of that but considering the nature of things now, I think that wouldn't be improbable," she said pondering. "Fück it, I'm doing it. Thanks Deb, you're a darling. Increasing my academic status isn't a bad idea, it has it's own honour." Deborah nodded in agreement to the last statement.

"And aside that, I'll be exposed to some knowledge which will definitely be handy especially in my business. So yeah, I'm doing it. It's part of my fat plan list," she said saying the last statement with a humour tone and signifying with her hands.

"What about you?"

"As a scientist, there's no option. If you want to be an established and acknowledged scientist, you have to have the necessary degrees and of course the scientific works. Both are paramount. So as someone who plans to run up the scientific ladder as a research microbiologist, I have to get my first degree, masters and doctorate."

"Any plans to be an academian?"

"Noooooo. My desire is to be a research microbiologist. I want to work in the laboratory, not class or lecture rooms, but that doesn't mean if an amazing academic opportunity present itself i won't grap it, I may but that won't stop me from doing my research thing." Precious nodded in acknowledgement.

Xavier's family came visiting. To be candid, she felt her space being invaded but hey, it's his family and besides life is an open phenomenon, so spaces are bound to be invaded, one just have to cope with that. So far so good, the relationship between her and Xavier's family have been smooth especially with Deborah whom she bonded deeply with. The intimacy between the Uwehs was immense. The bond, the affection, the unity were profound. This casted her mind to her own family. Hers had the family relationship no doubt but to the degree of the Uwehs, no, it was miles beneath. The connection present in this family was far stronger than hers. Not that her family was actually lacks love and unity, they don't, as a matter of fact, they're amazing, not ideal though but okay nevertheless. Seeing the Uwehs, she deeply desired such intimacy and she made it a goal to ensure that such would be present in the family she would create with her heart-throb.

"So tell me about how you and my brother happened."

"I thought he must have told you that."

"Yesssssssssssss, he did. He said you met at Xav Group's tenth anniversary, became friends, then feelings started flying around, you proposed, he accepted." Precious smirked, the part that got her was the, "you proposed."

"Well, he said it all but there's a part he left out," Precious said feeling the urge for some strange reasons to tell her the entirety of the story.

"Which is?" Deborah asked raising an inquisitive brow.

Precious went on to tell her version of the story starting from her sex quest and on, excluding the "I was a prostitute" part. She felt that was too much information. She didn't know how Deb might react to that info. The last thing she wanted was jeopardising the relationship she has with Her, Xavier and the Uwehs.

"Wait a minute... imma tryna tell me that you guys met because you were on a self imposed mission to fück him in other to sate a fantasy?"

Precious shrugged and responded, "Yes... but the universe had other plans." She continued her tale as the prospective sister in laws time continued.

Sadly, we all have to live with the consequences of our actions. I know this two will weather the storm if truly what they share is genuine. Xavier is a great man tho for standing up to his parents n defend his woman. Everybody deserves a second chance at life fr and Precious is not taking that chance for granted with all what she has done for herself. I’m sure they will come out stronger after this tribulation. CHAPTER THIRTY THREE



The low energy that permeated the atmosphere of the restaurant was one Precious was grateful for. The restaurant still had the busy environment as people went about with whatever activities brought them there; dates, hook ups, business engagements, sightseeing or to be at peace with the battalions in that sac behind their abdomen. Despite the apparent busyness, the restaurant still maintained a calm atmosphere or semi one, but whatever it was, it was one Precious was grateful for and she showed her gratitude by aligning her mind with it, taking in and relishing the peace and calmness it offered.

She gulped the content of the chilled La Casera from it plastic bottle and sighed in satisfaction. Her eyes gazing at the golden liquid in the bottle, she developed a hobby in observing the bubbles of the liquid as they ran upwards to the surface of the liquid, joining themselves to their comrades. It seems it was a case of power play as some of the bubbles dissipated at contact with their comrades on the surface while some stood their grounds. As mundane as such event, it felt to her as a message, but what? Ohhh! She gets it, survival of the fittest, only the strongest matter survives, only the strongest bubbles find and maintain their place at the surface. Isn't the Universe queer? Same principles cutting across various spectrum of reality, be it in the process of biological evolution or the human society or even the world of a soft drink, a liquid which in few minutes will have no place in reality. But the enigma was, does this connect to her?

Gbam! The light sound of a bag, a female hand bag on her table got her attention. She raised her head and stared at the intruder. Great! It wasn't an intruder, it was the very reason she was here in this restaurant.

"Sorry for the delay," Nichollete apologized. "Some things popped up."

Precious facial shrugged in acceptance, although it did little, scratch that, it did nothing to alleviate the anxiety weighing down on her. Why this rendezvous? What is it Xav's mum want to tell me? I hope it doesn't make this already worse situation and relationship worst? She overheated her mind with this questions. Her breath became heavy and somewhat irregular, she squeezed her palms to calm herself. Her mind flashed back to the bubble saga.

Involuntarily, she glanced at the bottle, most of the bubble on its surface were gone leaving few here and there but nevertheless the message passed was the same, survival of the fittest. Only the strong survive. She has to be strong, strong for her wellbeing and sanity, strong for Xavier and their relationship, strong for love and survival, strong for the future and happiness.

"I'm sure you're aware of all the drama you've brought into my son's Iife," Nichollete accused, her voice graciously emitting her American accent.

Precious stared at her fingers, fiddling them nervously against each other. Be strong damn it. It's not your fault you fell in love. It's not your fault Xav accepted you and your past despite everything. Don't feel guilty, her mind chided her or she chided her mind, that itself was complicated but whatever the case, there was a chiding and it involved her. Okay, she was going to do this. With courage she raised her face and parrelled it with the older face opposite her.

"My son has never had controversies, negative controversies, sorrounding his life but alas, that's the case today. Why? Because you chose to carry yourself into his life."

"Please don't take this the wrong way, I don't hate you. To me you're a beautiful soul but you must understand, I'm only being a mother," she said. "Now ask yourself, if you were to be a mother, would you let someone like you, of your past, be with your son?" She asked attempting to play the reverse game.

Now, that was one tricky question. Would she? Precious pondered.

"Listen Precious," Nichollete said, gently holding her hands. "My son is a developed man, an evolved one, one without an indecent past and it will be beautiful if he's rewarded with a good woman, not just any good woman but one with a decent and responsible past. Please grant my son this privilege. I know you love him, but love also involves sacrifice. It'll hurt but it's for the better. Think about it, why will he after having a decent past end up with you, one with an indecent past. It's unfair on all levels," she said.

"Don't you think he deserves a better woman? I know he thinks you're okay for him but that's an emotional decision. He's not being objective. But you can be of help. Leave him. You're not good for him, not with your past. The universe is even in agreement here. Take a look at all the drama your presence in his life has caused, that's a message from the universe."

Nichollete stared at the young face gazing back at her. It reeked of diversity of emotions; hurt, anger, anxiety, confusion, frustration, fear, uncertainty etc. She felt what she was passing through but she had to keep sentiments aside, Xavier must not make a mistake. She was only being a mother, even the young lady opposite her would do same if put in her shoes.

"Think about it, if you're in my shoes, won't you do the same?"

Precious opened her mouth to reply but was immediately interrupted by her,
"You don't have to say anything. Just think over it and please do it objectively. Remember Xavier deserves a woman with a decent past, not your type. They're men for you but definitely not my Xav. If you love him, you will give him that privilege. He deserves it, don't you think so?" Nichollete said, got up and walked off after sharing a long fixed look with her. She hoped this mind play of hers churns out positive results.
