Contractors have to shape up or face severe consequences.

I watched the video, here is some more information leading to Umahi making that comment.

The project was an 11km project awarded a few years back, the Federal Ministry of Works were led to believe that 5km has been completed and has paid so far N500m of estimates total bill recently jacked up to N4 Bn.

However on inspection Umahi cannot find any evidence of the 5km allegedly built so in front of the camera he confronted the contractor.
He told him he is terminating the contract for the reason of the contractor's lack of capacity unless he they can partner with competent engineering firms to complete the project.

Contractor started to give excuse that the road was built but destroyed again by heavy trucks, so Umahi said that the road has to be rebuilt and that he would not pay an additional kobo, that the best he can do for the contractor is not to query or tax the N500m already paid to him.

He added but if the contractor tries to fight him he would seek to recover the N500m already paid, it was as the contractor continued try and make his case, that Umahi cut him short and told him that he should be ashamed of himself, then the video ends.

In your book, any Igbo man who attack and chew up his own brothers and sisters is detribalized. Whatever that means. That's why you'd mention soludo and umahi and forgot orji kalu, even though kalu rolls with northerners and southwesterners more than any Igbo politician.

I can see a lot of folks praising the Man and his choice as Minister. Good. But this should be short lived. We must also face the reality that this is the exact reason why nothing really works, or works in the kind of sustainable manner to build what is called an institution, a culture.

It is just reprehensible that a Ministry with thousands of staff have to depend on the Minister to call to order a Contractor handling a far flung project. It shows the lack of ethics and proper corporate governance.

Something is broken in that Ministry that is much more important than the project in question and could be far reaching round other parts of the country.

I know that not only does the Ministry of Works have Supervising agents in its employment but it also engages Consultants and high cost. Enough layers of protection to ensure quality is delivered at this time of great infrastructural deficit and economic pressure.

We must insist that Works department as an institution is reformed and an end put to the laxity and wanton corruption that has bedeviled it for a generation.

That is the responsibility of the Minister and the biggest legacy he will leave. Much more important than his presence on every construction site.

Let him be on every construction site for now, if it guarantees good jobs by the contractors. He will fight corruption in the ministry later. Nigerians need result right now.

You think Umahi touring and inspecting projects around the whole country and meeting with governors has the time to set up private meetings with every contractor ?

He is even making his own notes about what he has instructed the contractors to do as he is conducting the the interview because of lack of time.

The Ministry of Works is one of the most corrupt gov't entities, only theirs is done on a low key. I know what my dad saw supervising Ogbomoso-Ilorin road while he was still in active service, both from colleagues and contractors, all because he won't allow them to do shoddy jobs like this one. He was attacked physically, spiritually, and mentally. All this the minister is saying is for the camera. Let him settle in. The forces in that ministry are bigger than him. The country has made too many misfits powerful financially that they wouldn't mind going to war if they can't have their way. Engr. Umahi too will do his bits and leave like others before him.

Why won't he do road in the Southwest? Stop the hate... I live in Southwest and your making things uncomfortable for us that have lived here for many years. It's now our home, we only travel to the East occasionally and come back again. And mind you the Igbos also plied the road in the Southwest like the Yorubas as well.

Ministry of works does not do direct construction works anywhere in the world today! Ministry of works will do more of overseeing and qualifications.
