The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken a significant step to empower its citizens and improve the accountability of electricity distribution companies (DisCos) with the introduction of the groundbreaking Power Outage Reporting System app.

Unveiled at the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) headquarters in Abuja, with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company serving as a test-run, the app, available for download on the Google Play Store, is set to revolutionize how power disruptions are reported and resolved in Nigeria. This innovative solution reflects the government's dedication to enhancing the power sector and ensuring reliable electricity services for consumers.

NERC Chairman, Sanusi Garba, emphasized the app's importance in addressing the long-standing issue of inadequate responses to power disruption complaints. He mentioned that the app would help monitor compliance with new regulations requiring timely resolution of customer complaints by public utilities, especially Discos.

Originally conceived to crowdsource data for assessing service-based tariffs, the Power Outage Reporting System now provides real-time data through smart meters on all feeders, ensuring accountability and adherence to tariff orders by the Discos.

Garba also highlighted the progress made in smart metering electricity feeders, which will significantly enhance the app's effectiveness.

The launch of this innovative app empowers Nigerian consumers to report power disruptions, hold Discos accountable, and contribute to overall power sector improvement. This represents a crucial step toward a more reliable and efficient electricity supply for Nigerians.

The Power Outage Reporting System app is expected to empower citizens, enhance transparency, and play a pivotal role in reshaping Nigeria's power landscape. It aligns with ongoing government and NERC efforts to reform the energy sector, promising a brighter future for all Nigerians.
