Naira Tumbles To 980/Dollar, FX Shortage Worsens by iwaeda(op): 11:14am On Sep 21, 2023
The naira continued its downward trend after exchanging to the dollar at 980/$ at the parallel market on Wednesday.

A week earlier, the naira exchanged to the dollar at 950/$.

Bureau de Change operators who spoke to The PUNCH attributed the fall to scarcity of foreign currency.

A BDC operator, Idris Musa, said, “We bought and sold the naira today at 965/$ and 980/$. The dollar is not even available.”

Another BDC operator, Yusuf Kareem, said, “The dollar was sold for 980 today. We don’t know if it will continue to go up or if it can come down.”

However, on the FMDQ at the Investor & Exporter forex window, the naira appreciated slightly after closing at 770.71/$ on Wednesday from 776.76/$ on Tuesday.

The Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria, recently, urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to grant Bureaux De Change operators digital autonomy to achieve exchange rate convergence.

In a statement, the President, ABCON Dr. Aminu Gwadabe, called on the apex bank to grant a no objection approval for the BDCs to fully go digital on all their operational correspondences.

Gwadabe said foreign currencies by BDCs were derived from private sources and other sources which may include the CBN window as determined by the CBN any time for the purpose of funding Business Travel Allowance, Personal Travel Allowance, School Fees Payment abroad, Medicals, mortgage, personal home remittances and subscription.

He said ABCON had training compliance officers to ensure they were acquainted with what was required of them, especially on monthly rendition of results and tracking illicit capital flows through compliance.

According to Gwadabe, BDCs were complying with the rendition of suspicious transactions reports as directed by NFIU, CBN, and EFCC.

He said BDCs were required to comply with all extant rules & regulations prescribed by the CBN, while the CBN closely supervised and monitored their operations.

Mr. President,
- Focusing on taxation without any clear plan to boost the productive capacities of existing businesses as well as create enabling environment for new businesses to create jobs is antithesis of economic growth. No economy grows on taxation alone.

- Leave the pursuit of FDIs for now. Come home and rebuild the building blocks of the economy.

- Quit wooing UAE like a beautiful bride. Come home and focus on wooing local investors to invest in sundry areas of the economy.

- Forget the beautiful speech at UNGA. Come home and give beautiful economic roadmap.

- Forget ringing bell at NASDAQ stock market. Come home to ring the bell of local industries and SMEs by carefully packed incentives and ease of doing business initiatives.

- Run back back home and roll out your all-encompassing economic plan to revitalize the economy as contained in your manifesto.

- Quit chasing shadows. Go after the substance for time is running out.

- There is fire on mountain at home. Run home and quench it, my president.

the basics of economics, they ignored and are more interested in executive-stunts instead of building, or reinforcing where needed, the system, grounds up. Bandits are having a field day intercepting govt taxes as levies while killing production. He doesn't see the sense in building local production that can reduce import and strengthen the economy. As far as they are concerned, the rent-seeking elements among us are part of their political structure and shouldn't be tampared with.
If the man knows his priorities, he should relocate to Lekki in dangote refinery and ensure that plant come alive to save valuable forex before even planning any foreign trip.

You rushed and devalued the Naira without the attendant indices to make it stable at that price. You never made any attempt to increase our export but you rushed and removed the peg. Same way you rushed to remove subsidy instead of first tackling the corruption in the subsidy regime to get the accurate number of liters we consume daily.
These 2 acts are just to show how lazy and wicked our leaders can be. Because it is only a lazy and wicked person seeking for an easy way out will carry such actions without thinking about the adverse effect they will have on its citizens

The naira is drilling the ground to meet some crude oil.
Re: Naira Tumbles To 980/Dollar, FX Shortage Worsens by Nazgul:
I want to ask...

Aside crude oil, what else does Nigeria export. Cos the way our naira is diving downwards, it's almost as if we export nothing.

Why can't Tinubu diversify the economy. Shebi they said gold is in zamfara, why not export it in large quantity and get forex?

We have tons of agricultural raw materials the world needs, like Cocoa, cashew, cotton, millet, rubber...etc.

What's with the absolute dependence on crude oil, why not invest in agriculture and export these raw materials to countries that need them?
