Foolish talk about supposedly past feats. It was achieved but how was that possible, that's the only question whose answer can benefit the present generation.

A simple trip to Benin will solve your issue. Simply get to Benin and ask anyone to direct you to the 'moat' as they call it.

Everyone in Benin knows about it. I actually lived in Benin for a while as a kid. The moat was very close to our house, and no one seemed to know why it was there. It was very massive and deep. You dare not get too near it because if you fall inside, your own don finish be dat. It's like falling down from a three storey building. Obviously you will find the moat at many points in the city since it is an endless wall. It is so deep and wide that you will wonder how on earth did those people build it for 6,500 kilometres in total length, with no tractors or cranes or modern equipment. It's just incredible.

Artistic rendition of 15th century Benin City showing the wall and streetlights, as described by Dutch and Portuguese visitors, who also described Benin City as one of the best planned and most beautiful cities in the world.
Slaves - lots of them, sometimes working themselves to death. (Unless you believe they had giants.) Nobody holy back then.

Mr Man your writeup is watery, the length of the whole world is 40,000 km by length and the wall of Benin covers half of that, from Lagos to London is 5,020 km while the wall of Benin is 16,000 km long?
How is that even possible?

OP God bless you. I am from a very privileged family in Benin, and can tell you it hurts reminiscing about the greatness of the ancient Benin kingdom. I told some here who was arguing about the relevance of tribes who were not invited to sign the treaty for Nigeria's amalgamation that the British designed Nigeria to fail from day one. At Independence, there was no reason the Binis shouldn't have taken a pole position at the negotiation table because we had exceptional self-governing capabilities that dated back to centuries. It was actually a punitive measure against the people they perceived as rebellious, unagreable and who won't further their interests as we still have them today. Guess what, the invasion of Benin was the preclude. They broke their will, and dysmisified them, and centuries after they've been conditioned to act and think like the rest of the country rather than the superior tribe they once were.

Not on Google map, is the wall actually still there? As in, if one gets to Benin today, will one see the wall? I will really love to know also

Yes there are sections of it still existing. You will be amazed. But erosion and lack of care has destroyed a lot of it

It wouldn't surprise me if they had a form of writing in Benin, at least for a small number of civil servants etc, because they had real administrative sophistication. At the very least, some could read and write Portuguese, such as a 16th century Oba whose name escapes me right now. Also, don't forget the British bombed and burnt down the ENTIRE CITY, and possibly killed off its educated class and burnt their written records if they had any.

British Artist's rendition of Benin City in 1846 showing multi-storeyed monuments and public buildings.

Now you know why the Brits were so desperate to burn down this city in 1897. They had to create the impression that all we built were mud huts in the village until they came to 'civilize' us. Their trick worked because if you go to Badagry in Lagos today, you will see one wretched colonial building from the 1920s which our Nigerian tour guide proudly presents to tourists as the ''first storey building in Nigeria''.

Our ignorance of our history is DISGUSTING AND DEPRESSING.

16th Century Benin City

Also, it was Oba Esigie that had sophistication in Portuguese.

I suspect this wall was built to keep out the Arab jihadists invading West Africa many centuries ago.

It clearly worked. For centuries. In fact it could be reasonably argued that had this wall not been built, we would be bearing names like Abdullahi and Muhammed today instead of Ayodele, Chukwuma, and so on, since Benin was the biggest and most powerful kingdom of the south, and had they captured Benin, the rest of the region would have been a breeze for them.

So, a very good and laudable project.

Indigenously envisioned, conceptualized, and executed.

shocked

Our ancestors must be ashamed of us 😔.

I know some of our traditions wasn't good (just like it was in every culture in the world) but we believed in ourselves and would have been better than we were now.

I wonder what would have happened if we had the type of confidence people like the Chinese possess, that led them to develop at a faster pace.

Did we forget all these? What didn't our ancestors develop some system of writing that's popular in the south? A lot of questions not a lot of answers. If we had a system of writing, it would have been easier to regain our confidence since we can learn the exploits of our ancestors.

Now, we have to read a book by a European to know more about our ancestors 😔.
Our problem, in sub-Saharan Africa - was isolation. The Chinese were not isolated, the Arabs were not - they interacted with the WORLD throughout the ages. The ancient Egyptians invented writing. The Chinese invented paper. The Indians invented the 1, 2, 3 numbering system. The Arabs invented Algebra. The Indians invented surgery. The Europeans invented astronomy. Etc. The West absorbed all these and refined them. The Chinese absorbed things from the West and vice versa. Because there was INTERACTION. Sub-Saharan Africans are not seen to have contributed anything. But you think we didn't have science? Or even some form of writing? You'll be shocked! The East Africans did surgery long before oyinbos came. Marlians did astronomy. The Igbo and Efik had a writing system called Nsibidi. But these were ISOLATED civilisations and because they did not INTERACT with the outside world, they did not adopt formal writing and nothing was systematized, codified, scaled, and passed on.

We needed interaction with the outside world. Unfortunately, when it happened, it came in the form of slavery and colonialism. We finally adopted writing and systematized medicine but at the huge cost that we were exploited. And the rest is history.
_______

Edit: Malians not Marlians! shocked

I have NEVER been a tribalist.

I am Igbo, and I hate IPOB, and all traitors of Nigeria of whatever ethnic colouration, including Boko Haram.

IPOB and Boko Haram are two sides of the same coin of ignorance and stupidity.

One thing you guys need to realise is that this tribalism you practice is unAFRICAN.

It was the colonialists who got you thinking in terms of 'I am Igbo'. 'You are Yoruba'.

Before colonialism, we identified ourselves by our town of origin and family/community lineage - NOT by our language.

Speaking Yoruba did not make you a ''Yoruba man''. You were an Egba man or an Ekiti man etc. Same for Igbos. Igbos never regarded themselves as one group before colonialism came. Go and read Achebe. Each town was a nation unto itself.

The colonialists introduced language bloc identification.
I agree with the last paragraph

I just posted pictures of the wall above here. What are you talking about?

The wall is partly overground and partly moat, which is covered by greenery.

Successive governments have neglected and ignored it.

In a serious country where people took pride in their history and heritage, that wall would have been our BIGGEST INCOME EARNER even more than oil, as a result of tourism.

This is literally the biggest man-made structure ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH!

Yet most NIGERIANS don't even know it exists, talk less of the world's people.

Ordinary Stonehenge in England brings in more than 20 billion dollars annually to the UK in tourism receipts.

Stonehenge is just a few rocks piled on top of each other to form a small circle.

Stonehenge

The whole world knows about Stonehenge, but nobody knows about the Great Benin Wall that is 4 times longer than the Great Wall of China.

In fact we have problems as a people.

They would rather tax the living daylight out of their citizenry.
It's so unfortunate that the people who would never have qualified for an ordinary messenger in the old era, are now our leaders.
They lack initiative and foresight. They are mentally lazy, want quick gratification, selfish and are ambassadors of mediocrity and corruption.

A generation must have compromised and allowed the dawn of this dispensation.
A criminally popular man is preferred to an upright man in almost every strata including religion. If Anini were alive today, people would have been worshipping him and maybe make him a governor or senator. He would have been stupendously rich. He would be people's role models. They would say he is bold, smart etc.

I believe like then, the sensible youth we have are laying a new foundation of righteousness.
It might take 300years to build also, but we'll have to play our path and lay the foundation of a better nation for the generations we may not see.

They covered 6,500 sq km and were all dug by the Edo people … They took an estimated 150 million hours... to construct, and are perhaps the largest single archaeological phenomenon on the planet”

150 million hours translates to more than 17 thousand years. Are the saying it took 17 thousand years to build the wall of 16k kilometers?

It is.

You can actually go on Google Earth and type in 'Benin wall', and you will see the full outline of the wall. It's unbelievably huge and expansive, and you will wonder how long it must have take them to build it. I mean, something 4 times longer than the Great Wall of China.

I read somewhere that it took around 300 years to build!

Can you imagine the level of state organisation and efficiency that would have allowed a project to continue till the end for 300 years?

There were many people who helped in building this wall who knew full well that they would not live to see its completion.

Today, even a 3 year long project can give us serious problems, never mind 300 years.

We would be looking for China or Julius Berger to do it, and we would be ready to pay them billions of dollars.

Such is the damage that colonial rule did to our sense of confidence in our capacity as a people.

This wall was built long before the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century.

They did not use any machines at all (at least none that we know of. Maybe they invented something they used, who knows? Do we research our history?)

But today, if we want to build a COMMON RAILWAY LINE, we call the Chinese.

We want to build an expressway, we call Julius Berger.

We want to build an airport or shopping mall, we call China.

I mean, we need to snap out of it, and become MEN again.

If you have been involved in Construction, you wont reason this way.

Projects that are executed by the Chinese or Julius Berger are done by who - Nigerians

You can go to any site and check: oil and gas, or Railway, government projects awarded to the foreign companies. It is Nigerians who are the Civil Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, masons, iron benders, carpenters, technicians, electricians, welders, fitters, etc.
What the foreigners are doing is mostly supervision (Slave drivers). They hardly bring in expertise. I have witnessed situations where the supervisors don't know what the workers are doing. They are there just to make sure the productivity targets are met. Earn more than Nigerians and treat them like slaves.

Give same project to Nigerian managed companies, Nigerian managers, engineers, supervisors, etc. and see complains everywhere, and failure to deliver.

Lazy, low IQ, uninspiring mumu youth. You couldn't do simple research to know the true history of the wall. You are here suggesting and guessing.
Lazy, zero-IQ retards like you will be the first to complain about how Nigeria is not developed like the Western world, not taking into consideration that a Westerner would have taken time and resources to write the true history of such a monument instead of guessing and suggesting.
