OP God bless you. I am from a very privileged family in Benin, and can tell you it hurts reminiscing about the greatness of the ancient Benin kingdom. I told some here who was arguing about the relevance of tribes who were not invited to sign the treaty for Nigeria's amalgamation that the British designed Nigeria to fail from day one. At Independence, there was no reason the Binis shouldn't have taken a pole position at the negotiation table because we had exceptional self-governing capabilities that dated back to centuries. Not true. The Oba of Benin had horses. When the crown prince of my home town went to disrupt a road construction undertaken by colonial officers (around 1900) he rode on his horse to meet them. The Oyo Empire had warriors on horse back.

The walls were not built in a straight line. They surrounded different towns and villages through various terrains.

Any sub-Saharan Africans who left and travelled did so individually. They were the exceptions. We never built ocean-going vessels to explore the seas. We did not travel far as organized groups.
