My colleague resumed the office today complaining very bitterly, so we got talking. He said his elder sister got a property somewhere in Lagos, she stayed there with her husband for a while, had a talent before they both traveled out of the country.
The other tenant also, relocated leaving the house empty; since nobody was now managing the property some hoodlums started breaking into the premises to steal properties bit by bit.

One of the hoodlums was caught and arrested, so my colleague’s brother went to the station as the bale was informed of this act. The police asked him some question which he detailed the them as he was standing in for his elder sister who was far away in London, so they took the criminal to the market where he sold those items, unfortunately know was recovered, the stolen items where valued at about N1,9MILLION naira.

The criminal was taken back to the station and apprehended, so my friends brother was asked to come on Saturday 23rd September for further action, he couldn’t make it to the station due to his work so he went to the station on 25th of September, the police arrested him collected his phones and locked him. Arrested and locked him for what?
They didn’t say anything about it, only for the police to inform the family members that he needs to be granted bill with N150, 0000. Is this a joke?
I’m so confused right now, how can you arrest someone who comes to report an issues and even want him to bail himself with naira.

Please advise
If you have evidence, kindly tag me on twitter, we can excalate the case and get justice

Get a lawyer and charge the matter to court but I strongly believe maybe you have not paid all the money you were asked to pay before mobilization .That 150,000 may be part of money you were ask to paid before they go for the arrest

That they now have the thief in their custody does not mean you won't pay that money or raise false alarm to tarnish their image agreement is agreement.

If they asked you for 170K to start work and you only give them 20,000 first and they were lucky to get the thief that does not mean you won't pay the balance.

Police are corrupt but that have not be so corrupt to the extend you are painting them.

There is no way they will put you in counter when you are the complaints if you are not guilty in your dealings with them

Should have called a lawyer along at the instance of going to report the case to the police, and other subsequent appearances....

Gather evidences and receipts, go get a human right activist.
Which evidence?? U think police are not careful doing thier criminal act? U have to pay the money cash and no evidence to back it up. U can't even go to the counter with your fone.
Same with anyone who come visiting.

This is always the end result when a government agency has refused to be useful in dispensing its duties in the right areas.

The police has been so useless in recent times because they have become a political dog and can only bark when their pay master says so.... Therefore to keep themselves unnecessarily relevant, they've decided to clampdown on innocent citizens all in the name of chasing the imaginary theives just to extort money from them.

I won't be surprised if police starts arresting road side food sellers too.

The quickest way to get justice in Nigeria now is through social media. Create a video or message and send to Instablog or post it on Twitter and ask people to retweet it. Narrate everything that happened and state the police station involved. Don’t forget to tag all the necessary police handles, especially the handles of their PRs

Since the agreement was that he should come on 23rd and work didn't allow him till two days later, did he at any point call to inform the police? That might be the cause of the problem... Him going two days later means the criminal was going to be in custody for the period.

Why are citizens supposed to pay the police?

Are you listening to yourself?

This doesn’t justify him being arrested

At most, they should have told him to go back and come again when it’s convenient for them since he didn’t come at the agreed upon date. How does arresting him fit into this?

it's not a justification, I just stated the probable cause since the op was oblivious of the reason for the arrest.

Maybe the property stolen by the first arrested thief was overstated. Upon investigation (scientific or black magic) police found out that your colleague's bro was not telling the whole truth. He too probably took some property and decided to pin all on the outside thief. Na so I see the tory sha. grin

You are supposed to pay because you are in Nigeria + the force members are few and there are many cases in the station. So it is those who pay that their case will be attended to

Go and report any case in police station even if your head is dripping with blood like tap you will pay money to effect arrest.

I guess this guy who made this post is ignorant of how police work.He want to fool them.

All the money that he is paying will be paid back by that thief. But to want to write the money he was ask to pay because they police should get money from the thief will not work
