Why did the African Union admit Israel as an observer during AU meetings?

This was highly controversial.

In February 2023 South Africa and Algeria ensured the Israeli observer was kicked out of the chamber.

Today, the same AU that accredited Israel to be an AU observer is condemning it for human rights abuses in Palestine.

Is the AU Commission alright in the head?

It's clear South Africa, Algeria and their allies have thwarted Israeli influence in the AU.

Nigeria - folded arms - just condemning as always.

South Africa and Algeria have won over the AU. The giants of Africa.

I understand Algeria will kick Israel out of an AU summit for geopolitical reasons, but you have to commend South Africa for standing up.

However, it was all about politics for the AU. The AU recognises that Israel has been on a recent path of building relationships so that it can become the major player in middle-eastern politics, and it didn't want to be left behind.

The current war with Hamas will take Israel several steps backward in its quest for regional socio-politico-economic dominance. Hamas knows this, and they had to act now to create a distraction. Even the proposed agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel has been placed on hold.
