INTERNET DEVELOPMENT AND CONNECTIVITY IN NIGERIA By TecPoint Global Solutions

The use of social media for electioneering is relatively new in Nigeria. While Nigeria connected to the web in 1996, it was later in 1998 that full accessibility to the internet was achieved (Adomi, 2005). In 1999, Nigerians had not established much presence on the web.
However, real internet access expansion in Nigeria started in 2001, when the country granted the global system for mobile communications (GSM) licenses to designated telecommunication companies. By late 2003, Nigeria had "a total of 750,000 internet users that represented 0.5 per cent of the population (Adomi, 2005).

From a total of 750,000 internet users in 2003, there has been consistently exponential growth in the sector, with about 100-120 million Nigerians connected to the internet as of 2019 (NOIPolls, 2019; Russon, 2020).

Internet connectivity and access to diverse social media platforms in Nigeria have experienced exponential growth. Nigeria is linked to multiple submarine fiber optic cables, including the Main One Cable System and the West Africa Cable System (WACS), which greatly enhance international connectivity and enable higher data transmission capacities.

Various internet service providers operate in Nigeria, offering internet services to businesses and individuals. These internet service providers offer a range of internet plans and packages to cater to different internet users’ needs.

The Nigerian government has also promoted broadband development and increased internet access across the country by implementing initiatives like the National Broadband Plan. The National Broadband Plan which supports the development of the digital economy aims to achieve 70% broadband penetration by 2025, with a focus on extending connectivity to underserved and unserved areas.

The growth of the internet has spurred the development of e-commerce platforms and digital services in Nigeria. Online marketplaces, ride-hailing services, food delivery apps, and Fintech platforms have gained popularity, transforming various sectors of the economy.
However, there are still challenges in internet development and connectivity in Nigeria. Infrastructure gaps, particularly in rural areas, remain a significant hurdle. Limited access to electricity and the high cost of internet services are also obstacles to widespread connectivity.

Nonetheless, Nigeria can anticipate the ongoing evolution of its internet landscape, with the deployment of 5G networks offering the potential for enhanced connectivity characterized by greater speed and reliability. Also, endeavours aimed at improving infrastructure and implementing policies that foster digital inclusion are expected to play a significant role in driving further advancements in internet development within the country

In conclusion, While Nigeria has made substantial strides in internet development and connectivity, there remains a need to continue efforts in order to achieve universal access and tackle existing challenges.

The hope of poor man in the rural area?
Na wah for you of all people asking this question.
Your darling oga at the top said just last year, with a casual look on his face and dismissive wave of his hands, that all youths need is to be feed cassava, garri, ewa, dodooo etc to exist. E bad e bad, put then in the army, teach them to clean and cock/ fire gun, then they eat cassava etc. You in particular joined to hail and defend him. You thought he was joking?
He did not say eg youths will be empowered, get best education, learn skills, access cheap entrepreneural financing, get best healthcare etc, rather you will farm and eat the product of your farming. Why then should you want more out of life when you can plant cassava and eat it 3 times daily and bellefull?.
Please don't be ambitious, be contented.
Re: Telecom Operators Want Tariff Hike Over Operating Costs by nairalanda1(m): 11:08am On Oct 10, 2023
I don't need to read the comments to see that most Nigerians are opposed to the proposed price hike. Many would even shout that the poor should breath. Many would even say that the telco companies are evil.

Well, some of the people shouting earn money from the same telcos. Directly and indirectly. And they may even be asking for a raise. Well, the price increase is the only way to pay for...that raise.

Then the telcos are doing upgrading of service. Internet service used to be godawful in the times past. (I still recall paying to browse in internet cafe, only to get 'bad and slow network' in times past.). That it is better now is because telcos could charge higher, and pay for improvements. Even now, MTN, Airtel, and co have to pay for an upgrade to 5G...and all that costs money.

At the end, even if the economy was good, things cost money. Salaries and suppliers have to be paid, and salaries cannot be static...or there would be revolt. Equipment and suchlike cost money, a lot of money. New upgrades cost money.

You can call me a joker, a son of a porcine, etc, but at the end of the day, THINGS COST MONEY. And from time to time prices have to go up. Otherwise, MTN for example might start paying its workers three thousand naira a month...just to save costs. cheesy

Hikes that has been there unofficially for years. How many Nigerians have the time to check their balances before and after making a call? How many Nigerians have the time to querry their daily data usage? 10GB is no longer 10GB and the value and services you get for a N1,000 airtime recharge is shitty.
