Nice2023:
That is not because we rely on oil alone.

Kuwait. Dubai,Jordan,Oman, rely on oil proceed and what they do differently is,they invest for tomorrow.

In Nigeria,we eat everything we make from oil. Go and ask Babangida,Abacha what they used the oil windfall to do.

These men aquandered the destiny of this country and now the civilian govt has started theirs too and they are the worst. Because what they accused the military for,is what they are doing without any remorse.
The way you people are quick to compare Nigeria to a non-comparable state is annoying sha.

Combine all 4 countries together, their population never reach Nigeria. And 1 of them alone produce more oil than Nigeria.

Does that make sense to you ?

Nigeria needs birth control. People should be banned from having more than 2 children so that our population growth stays around 1% for 30 years and we achieve a slghtly aged population.

Goodluck met it at N100 to one dollar. He left it at above N200 to one dollar because of the subsidy that the person you quoted is referring to.

GEJ had high oil prices till April 2014. (from 2010). Our debt was not as much as it is now, because obasanjo got debt forgiveness, Yaradua grew our reserves to 60 bn dollars, and oil prices remained high in 2010-14.

(We had the same situation in 1973-82, that was when one naira was equal to one dollar as at 1978. High oil prices for the time, meant high revenues from oil...naira easier to defend.).

Buhari was a bad leader because he met oil falling, but instead of taking sane decisions , he decided to defend the naira as if we were still having high earnings from oil. The result...debt and a reserve of 4 billion dollars...down from 34 some years ago.
why are you lying?? goodluck never meet anything at 100naira.. dollar was officially 150+ as at 2011 and around 200 by 2015.. stop lying to defend the bullshit in your head.. the information is everywhere for all to see..the last time we had dollar as low as 120 was in 2008....oga stop to dey leave in a bubble in your head

You really don't want to know how Buhari and Emefiele were managing the crashing naira value.

Most of the time, it was by BORROWING. cheesy. Now we are reaping the borrowing effect.

Does not make Tinubu better though. He helped bring Buhari. cheesy

You want a strong naira on the back of an economy that exports one thing and one thing alone? Tell me another story. cheesy
kk2027 hope your ignorance has been cleared? It is always your kind way never exchange dollars before, go they purport to make the most noise.

A huge IMF loan is necessary to inject forex into the economy. We also need big hikes in interest rates to cool down inflation and make the naira relatively more attractive to hold. The fact that the CBN has not responded with rate hikes worries me and suggests a degree of ineptitude or cowardice on their part.

They need to also start looking at assets (including the ports and NNPC/refineries) to sell to foreign investors as this can draw in forex. There is a whole range of policy reforms they can pursue to build confidence and almost 1/2 year is gone and they are still focusing on propaganda with a nearly comatose president who is too brain-dead to master policy details.

If you want to read about the textbook case on how to get out of this malaise, look at the reforms undertaken by South Korea from 1997 after its financial crisis.
You really are a seer.

The federal government will need a bail out.

The government already has plans to sell NNPC assets. How soon is what we don't know.

Yes, interest rates need to go up but you have a president who wants low interest rates. I suspect to get an IMF facility, the institution may ask for terms they aren't willing to submit to and that may be what's delaying things. An example is an attrition in the number of civil servants. The NLC will go mad. This is a first term government and such policies are usually postponed till a second term when the office holder won't be contending again.
