![]() Nigerian export promotion council need to do more Do you know it's cheaper to ship sheer butter and cocoa through Ghana than using Nigeria Some years back got a juicy offer to export charcoal to some European industry through a b2b site We sourced our charcoal cheaply in Oke Ogun Oyo State, got a warehouse in Ibadan and packaged it depending on the size, we go workers who rebagged it Problem started when Oyo State Government Environmental Agency under Ajimobi first slammed us with sanctions, locking out warehouse for violating environmental laws of the state We begged and begged bribe all the people we know in the secetariate only to get the charcoal back with them asking us to auction it and never trade such in the state again . |

**For real?? **See this, 100 tonnes = 100,000 kilograms **That means 1 tonne = 1000 kilograms **Now, if 100 tonnes = 100,000 kilograms = $35,000; **Then 1 kilogram = $35,000 ÷ 100,000 kg; **Which equals $0.35; **We can say, 1kg = $0.35. **Now, let's convert to naira using the official rate, which is #787/$ **We get, #275.45/kilogram!! **To export 1kg of any stuff, you gonn' pay #275.45 for that. **Somewhat cheap, isn't it?? **$0.04/kg (#31.48/kg) in Ghana!! Fúck the government!! |

I once enquired about cost of sending 15kg package out of Nigeria and got a quote of 115K from one ogogoro looking Nipost man. That was 2018-19 If we talk now, the cassava mafia and their corn-legends may attack as paid to. |

A lot happens . I have exported all manner of things from Nigeria. And below are my observations : 1. Exports from nigeria are more expensive than other countries. If you try to export soyabeans, palm oil and ginger you will be discouraged by the prices the buyer gives you because there are other countries that sell cheaper . 2. Most export materials are gotten from the villages so you have to transport to a state with port. A lot of export expenses goes into road expenses( each checkpoint has a fixed amount , plus the touts on the road collecting produce tax) , 3. Community taxes also makes things expensive: you will settle king, youth , elders etc 4. If you do your export on a large scale , you will attract state and local government officials who will tax you without pity. At the end of all these the international buyer still expects your price to be same as other west African Nations . |

kcprince:While all these factors you listed are valid, only point 3 and 4 sort of address the issues of "ease of business" in Nigeria. We should have leaders by now that are concerned enough to streamline processes and monitor them, even if it means installing cheap cameras in every single government office and on every law enforcer and other macroscopic ideas to facilitate ease of business. |

The funniest thing in all this is that the money won’t even get to the government account as those at the port and the agencies would have siphoned lot of it. So it is a lose/lose game for both the federal government and the people exporting. |

That's what am thinking currently, I want to export Garri of 100kg to Chicago and GIG billed me around 1 million naira, imagine that, whereas some company charge around 550k, some 350k, the least I got is 350k by plane but by ship is around 65k but it's like 3 month journey. |
