—Thugs unleash mayhem on protesters

OWERRI– The President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero has been whisked away by the Police at the ongoing protest in Imo state.

This is as miscreants have descended on protesters, smashing vehicles and inflicting wounds on labour members.

Already, the whereabouts of the NLC President is unknown as heavily armed security personnel took him away.

Recall Vanguard had earlier published a report on Sunday, wherein NLC said it would begin protests in Imo State from Nov. 1. over alleged violation and abuse of rights and privileges of workers by the State government.

Ajaero said that “NLC was deeply concerned about the persistent and egregious violations of the rights and privileges of workers in Imo State by the State Government.”

“Despite our repeated efforts to engage in constructive dialogue and reach amicable agreements, the Imo State Government has become a habitual and serial breaker of these agreements, continuing to trample on the rights of workers in the state.

“As a result, we are left with no choice but to embark on mass protests and industrial actions beginning on the 1st day of November, 2023.

“This is to demonstrate our outrage and stop the continuing violation of the rights and privileges of workers in the state,”

The NLC president added that the protest was imperative as the government of the state had refused to implement previous agreements.

According to Ajaero, the government has repeatedly reneged on agreements, most notably the accord reached on January 9th, 2021, between the Government and Organised Labour.

“On outstanding salary arrears, shockingly, some workers have been subjected to a staggering 20 months of unpaid salaries under the unfounded label of ‘ghost workers’.

“Unjust declaration of workers as ghost workers,. Approximately 11,000 hardworking individuals have been unjustly branded as ghost workers, their salaries diverted even while they diligently carried out their duties,” he said.

The gov. thinks he can act like a dictator and still win his elections ten days away because he's one of the king's men. And well, since precedence has already been set in stone, he doesn't need the people's votes to win! Even though we're living in the 21st century our politics in this part of the world is still at pre-independence level. We think & say we understand democracy, but justify our political leaders when they act like feudal lords. undecided

Uzodinma is just a hopless idiot. This is the kind of disaster the supreme court foisted on the people of Imo state.

The calamity of a governor never had the interest of the people at heart

The intention of Mr. Ajaero is to bring bad name to the government few days to the election. He is purely on campaign for Labour party.

The NLC president is clearly working for LP. Otherwise why would you lead a protest few days to an election?

So it's only imo state that has issues with workers? No other state for their stupid protest?

They should arrest him and put him in jail

Politics is local. Mr Ajaero is from Imo state and working for LP. What he is doing and the timing is pure political brigandage against the ruling APC govt in the state.
Imo state Gov and the government should not be naive enough to sit idly watch him work for labour party with this kind of subterfuge.

When last NLC become a political party that campaign for candidate? He can't eat his cake and have it. This is the first time in history NLC will be in national politics. Any things NLC talk now, the government will always respond to it with political angle not base on fact.

Ajaero is not being neutral. The same mistakes he made with Peter Obi are what he is repeating in Imo.

Ajaero should park well. This his industrial action is politically motivated.

A quick question, why exactly do they not want that Labour Party to rule states in Igbo land? Anambra precisely?
