The Economic Financial Crimes Commission has released 58 out of 69 students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, arrested earlier on Wednesday.

The PUNCH earlier reported that the commission arrested no fewer than 70 students of the university.
They were reportedly arrested by officials of the EFCC in a midnight raid on hostels outside the campus.

Multiple sources in Ile-Ife confirmed to our correspondent on Wednesday morning that the officials, around 2 a.m., stormed the Fine Touch and Superb hostels in Oduduwa Estate, Ile-Ife, broke into rooms, and arrested the students.
However, the National Association Of University Students condemned the arrest of the students by the EFCC.

In a statement signed by its National Director of Security and Safety, Eruobami Ayobami; Deputy National President, Babalola Daniel; and the Vice Chairman of NAUS in the state, Akinyemi Hammed, the students’ leadership faults the process and actions of the commission, saying, “It is important that as students leaders, the security and safety of our students is paramount to us and the action of the EFCC is synonymous to an action of gang of thieves and burglars.”

The anti-graft agency in a statement said it arrested 69 suspected internet fraudsters in Ile-Ife.

“They were arrested on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Oduduwa Estate area of Ile-Ife, Osun State following actionable intelligence on their suspected involvement in fraudulent internet-related activities. Credible intelligence linked Oduduwa Estate with activities of suspected internet fraudsters,” the anti-graft agency said.

Confirming the release to our correspondent at 8:51pm on Wednesday, Eruobami said, “58 students have been released.”

Such a banana republic.

So you just mass arrest, based on some unfounded "actionable intelligence" and release them when you like as if it's nothing.

What of the trauma you must have put their people through already.

Imagine the explanations some will owe their parents, loved ones and neighbours at home. Some may never be able to redeem their image again, once the word goes out they were among those arrested, albeit arbitrarily.

Really unfortunate.

Grill them and release only those who have no Internet fraud footprint.

As for the rest, let them be prosecuted with whatever evidence that has implicated them.

The fact some Nairalanders think this efcc sting operation is reasonable baffles me.
Nigeria is far away from developing soon.

None of these.

The government simply is smart.

They know people are tired, hungry and angry and issues like this is incendiary and can heat up the polity.
But many people have learn alot from badnews
The problem is not whether or not people learn from it. People can learn from good or moderate news too. But you actively search for tragic news because you think it drives traffic, and will also bring you profit. That means you're profiting off of other peoples pain.
