The Senate Committee on Navy said it will come up with a plan to resist the takeover of oil-rich Tongeji Island in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State by the Benin Republic and its foreign allies.

Oil was first discovered on Tongeji Island in 2008. An oil firm, Gasoline Integrated International, in an expression of interest, planned to build a $3 billion refinery on Tongeji Island.

Speaking at the end of a facility tour of the Western Naval Command in Lagos, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, Senator Gbenga Daniel, expressed concern over the abandonment of Tongeji Island.

He said the federal government cannot afford to lose the island just like it did with the oil-rich Bakassi peninsula to Cameroon.

Daniel said his committee would strategise on what to do to ensure that Nigeria did not lose Tongeji.

“We are currently strategizing on what we need to do as a government so that we don’t lose Tongeji just like we ceded certain areas in Calabar to Cameroon.

“We are working on that but we will not disclose our strategies because these are security matters,” he said.

If you read Lord Lugard's Dual Mandate he explained how Cross River was Obtained by the British Colonial Govt in exchange.for Bakassi Peninsula which was given to German Colonial Govt of Cameroon

It was Ratified at the Berlin Conference

Today's Cross River was held by the Germans before the agreement. The Germans were also to be given free passage on the Cross Rivers to their Colonies in Northern Cameroon

If you look at the Map at least 90% of Tongeji is in Ogun State I don't think there is much to dispute

There are a lot of communities in Ogun State that are really suffering neglect,I will keep shouting until the Ogun State Government does the needful
Please I appeal to the government to visit Ogun Waterside LGA,the community shares boundaries with Ibeju Lekki LGA
Almost no government presence but blessed with wonderful beaches and Good Lagoon front viable for tourism and residency
I took a great pain in investing in that community but there is little we can do
The villages like Lupefun,Lomitoto and Ode Omi town deserve to live better

You are saying a different thing. Why was there a truce or agreement between nigerian government and Cameron during the civil war that Bakassi will be given to Cameroun if they agree to work together against the Biafrans?

The Berlin Conference was what the World Court relied on to find in Cameroons favor

What happened was that after the World Wars and Germany's defeat the British took Advantage of Germany because Germany couldn't enforce anything

But the Agreement had already been reached previously at the Berlin Conference where the Boundaries had been decided that was what Cameroon rightly relied on
