Those few that was expecting much from the government fuel subsidy removal, after the present govt told us the subsidy regime only favour the rich, as a middle class down to manageable class how is this subsidy removal regime favouring you? Considering (1) Till date the fuel prices still going up without any sign of coming down. (2) The mass infrastructures developments FG promised none seen yet. (3) Workers welfare FG promised if subsidy is removed none yet even the students loans (4) Dangote and local refineries they used in deceiving us for fast possibility fuel price coming down none at sight. Or does it mean FG just remove the subsidy to recover money spent during election and I conclude this by still asking how is the fuel subsidy removal really favouring the masses. |

If I stop subsidising your daily bread, you'd need to pay full price for your daily bread, and whether this favours your or not depends on you. Fact that I'm subsidising your bread means I can negotiate to pay the bread seller less, especially if I'm buying in bulk to subsidise lots of daily breads. This would suppress the profit of the bread seller, which would negatively affect the bread maker, who might rather not sell bread to the bread seller, thereby causing occasional scarcity of bread. So, does this favour the masses? Well, that depends on who the masses are and what the masses value. If the masses are bread sellers, they'd likely make more money, which they might invest in their bread making to eventually make bread cheaper and more readily available for you the daily bread eating masses. And though the privilege would cost you the bread eater more, there'd always be bread for you to purchase. Now for the elephant. Do you know that NYSC is wage subsidy, and that it suppresses your earnings and thereby your ability to buy bread? I can hire corpers who are partly paid by the government so your labour costs me little. Problem is, government would not pay you anything close to what your labour is worth since they buy labour in bulk, and your employment is only for one year since I can rinse and repeat corpers, leaving last year's corpers unemployed and unable to buy bread. Guess the masses need to decide in the end if subsidies favour them. Personally, I think bread subsidies reduce investment in bread making, which makes bread not so easily available for the masses. That said, I think government still subsidises fuel, or the cost to the masses would be higher. I have no evidence for this however, note. |

I know it's difficult for "this one" to comprehend, but I'm delighted not everyone imagines like "this one". wiseoneking: |
