AlexBells:King Jaja of Opobo stands very tall among the greatest Igbo men that walked the face of the earth. Rather than splitting Bonny into two in order to rule a part, he wisely left that Igbo island and founded a new Igbo settlement. He expanded and secured the Igbo territory. This singular act puts him up there as the greatest Igbo man in recent history. Bonny, Opobo and Okrika are all parts of Igboland. This should not even be debated. The history books are there for the world to see. To avoid unnecessary wars in future, the Ijaw should stop claiming these parts of Igboland. However, when it comes to Kalabari, a two-split solution will bring peace: The Western half of Kalabari goes to the Ijaw while the Eastern half goes to the Igbo. |

Empires, like the Benin empire built a lot of things we enjoy today... Lagos, Onitsha, Ile'Ife...the historical greatness of Benin empire, brings respect to Nigeria.

gidgiddy:This is not true, especially in Africa. Many of these empires were formed slowly as large communities turned larger and acquired more territory by offering smaller neighbours military protection and other benefits of belonging to a centralised entity, such as public works, in return for their annual or quarterly tributes, what we would call taxes today. Each of the regions had their representatives in the empire’s capital, and in their respective regions, and had AUTONOMY on how they chose to rule themselves, and over their resources. Even when territory was acquired through invasions, these liberties were still granted the conquered territories. |

One more thing. Empires emerged from large cities. It all starts with a CITY. Where a large concentration of people are drawn to a particular place, for whatever reason, be it water, soil fertility, trade, ANYTHING, a city eventually forms. As that city grows, the leaders realise they need external resources to sustain the city. That’s when they develop an imperialist mindset, and seek control over more of the surrounding territory. It wasn’t a hard sell to get local smaller villages and towns to want to join the new empire in the making. Many actually craved to belong to them, and welcomed being part of it. So it wasn’t all black and white as you see it. Igbos did not form an empire simply because the conditions I described above which cause CITIES to arise, did not occur. There was no great concentration of people in a particular location which drew people from far and wide, so as to form a city, that would have evolved into an empire. Access (or lack of it) to resources was evenly spread across the region, negating a need for agglomeration in a city. And no city, no empire. All that talk about Igbo republicanism being the cause is inaccurate. Cultures were dynamic, and could change when conditions dictated it. |

Catapault:Was there any empire that formed without violence? Why do you think cities were created? To build an army for defensive and offensive purposes. I have not seen any empire. What you decribed can be applied to kingdoms but not empires. |

joyandfaith:A kingdom is an empire. Just a smaller version. If empires are not fine by you, then neither can kingdoms. |

Catapault:There was oyo empire but nothing like ife, Ogbomoso, Ilorin, Ijebu, Egba empires but kingdoms. Kingdom is headed by a king but empire is headed by an emperor, hence the name imperial majesty. |

Catapault:This is not true. No race willingly surrenders her sovereignty to another without a form of coercion. Bini empire was built when the Bini had encounter with the Portuguese and acquired firearms with which they used to terrorize neighbors who were hitherto stronger than them. Igbos have innate hate for subjugation and naturally resisted the idea of surrendering their sovereignty to anyone else but themselves. What city exactly existed in Africa in precolonial times? More like clustered mudhouses. Igbos always fancied spaces and open air, so we were never going to live in clusters with no space for hygiene and fresh air that you erroneously call cities. We knew they were unhealthy for human living. Perhaps our Igbo ancestors understanding of living spaces, ventilation and clean environment is why we had less disease outbreaks and were able to amass a dense population for a people living in such a relatively smaller land Mass. Think about it. |
