So Disney's wish had a budget of $175m-$200m...

And so far it's made only over $50m?

This one na nuke grin grin grin

What is the cause of all these? Even if the movie is bad, this is brutal grin

It seems audiences have a lot of options now and won't settle for tràsh...when they can get better media via streaming

EVERYTHING EVERYTHING ALL AT ONCE is a very stupid movie and no one can tell me otherwise. I stopped watching after 40 minutes if I am not mistaken.
LOL!! It is probably the most overrated oscar best picture winner since Crash in 2004

The performance of this film is insane.... Finally Japan has a wide appeal live action to boast of in a long while.

Me:

Parasite
Decision To Leave
I have seen:

Past Lives
Burning
Oldboy
Parasite
The Handmaiden
Decision to Leave

I avoided Memories of Murder because it seemed le horror and I don't like horror

If I really had to pick I'd choose in this order:

1. The Handmaiden
2. Oldboy
3. Decision to Leave
4. Burning
5. Parasite
6. Past Lives

This was a very hard choice tbh...as they are all great movies

And thanks for this list:
I will download Fallen Angels and Drive My Car

Anatomie d'une chute aka Anatomy of a Fall (2023).

A delicately fabricated mystery thriller with a french flavour that would make John Grisham proud!

I have been looking out for this one since i saw the trailer sometime ago and it landed on my coffers on Friday and i had to devour almost immediately...

Starts off as a murder thriller with less intensity, but as it begins to peel away, it cascaded into a heated courtroom drama where under the uncanny scrutiny of the law and strangers, mistakes, secrets, and mental health issues is laid bare as our main act tries to defend herself in an apparent murder of her better half with her visually impaired son, seemingly the only witness.

Sandra Hùller delivers one of the finest acting i have seen in a female lead for a while, and she was basically the bane of the entire thing. Shame the Oscar big prize might ellude her because the movie seemed to be in an "Oscar limbo".

There's something about the french language that makes it so pleasing to hear, more so, it being spoken in a heated courtroom!. The dialogues were heavy with intent and so so good, totally reminded me of my one my fave movie "Marriage Story" (2019), that towed the same genre path.

Big shame, France decided not to submit it for best foreign language film at the Oscars next year due to the director's political squabble with the French President

But make no mistake, This was a special special film! 💐

The budget for this movie i 15 million dollars!!!!!! But you cant see the difference in terms of production design and visual effects with Hollywood's 200 million dollars budgets. You begin to ask where all the money goes!

The Holdovers (2023)

"Breakfast Club esque with Christmas stuffing".

This coming of age story about a "disgruntled" history teacher tasked with "holding over" a set of boys who couldn't be home for Christmas.

The story and premise is charming, and the on screen rapport between the 2 leads is exceptional. Although set in 70's, you would never know as the warmth of the plot and the encasing Christmas feeling makes it a delight to see.

It is far from a been a perfect film though, but maan...i am up for anything that even remotely has Paul Giamatti, he is able to bend and act flicks like this and Private Live (2018) that is so affectionate that you can't just tag him as "that guy from "Billions". He delivers an all timer here that saves the entire thing when it attempted to go bland...He is such a terrific actor and definitely one to watch out for during the award season based on this.

Surprisingly, I am having such a terrific run at good films in these last days of 2023, after the shambles the first 3 quarters had been flick wise. It bodes so well for 2024. This one is for the top shelf.

I have The Farewell, because of people saying Awkafina delivered a masterclass and it was a great film.
Memories of Murder and Past Lives are others on the queue alongside Chungking Express and In The Mood For Love.

Most people looking at the budget easily forget the circumstances of each individual industry is quite different. I hear the most expensive Japanese film is not a little more than $50mn, and we all know how quite capable they are and with technology.
So this movie being $15mn ain't really cheap in Japanese POV.
Even India's Bollywood that spend good money on blockbusters, their most expensive films are not up to $90mn. Unlike the Japanese that don't fancy huge sets and action all that much if it isn't in animé.

A major factor is the pay of the workers. In Hollywood, an A-List actor will easily pocket that $15mn. Some even get paid as high as $40mn. So it's hard to quantify Hollywood budgets with other film industry asides the UK.

KOTFM out this week?? Omo abeg oo. Cos the last I heard of its VOD release from Deadline was January 24th. 😢 If it's out soon, all the better.
Better to start appraising all the awards contenders this December instead of having to wait till early February before knowing where your faves stands, also avoidance of recency bias.

November was a decent month movie-wise.
I couldn't better September's epic run but this is waaayyy better than October disasterclass.

The focus was on clearing my 2023 film backlog.

Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by abduleez1(m): 12:17pm On Dec 03, 2023
I feel 2024 officially belongs to WB. They have the stronger slate lineup and the better variety.
And this most likely ain't all what they're releasing next year in theatres.
It's theirs to lose, especially now that Disney is a shadow of itself.

Imagine WB they had their biggest director, Chris Nolan, this people would cook.
