The way Disney fell way hard this year is startling. Person wey get SEVEN $1BN movies not long ago in 2019!!

GOTG3 is the ONLY Disney film to be successful this year. The rest are underperformances or outright flops.

The Flowers of War (2011)......8.5/10

This movie was set in wartime China during the Sino-Japanese war. And its plot is centred on the city of Nanking — the horrors of that encounter is more popularly known today as the "Rape of Nanking".
Women and children were killed, assaulted and raped and not exempted from the brutality that awaited their male counterparts. The men kinda had it better if you looked at it in the perspective of the women, since the men were mostly assured of quick deaths dying bravely for thy fatherland.

There's also the subplot of a foreigner who initially was selfish and planned on fulfilling his lust even at the expense of others but somewhat found a higher purpose in being the sole protector of the endangered ladies holed up at the convent. It turns into a Romance halfway into the movie but never really loses its focus on the central plot.

Impressive use of musical score, nice cinematography and great battle sequences to remind you it's a war movie. Top acting performance from the whole cast.

At some point the movie became a sorrowful watch. It was heartbreaking and filled with various emotions. You're angered at some point with the _prostitutes being cowards and allowing kids shield them from pitiful fates and their total indifference to the war and suffering. Then you're impressed with the sex-workers rising to the occasion to shield the kids from impending doom, then you're filled with a sorrowful realisation of their sacrifice while not fully knowing how each one's fate might turn out.
Omo, it's an epic battle of emotions. Sorrow and hopelessness from start to finish.


Kudos to Christian Bale and the child actors especially who gave life and character to the movie.
Masterful direction from Zhang Yi-mou with the characterization, tempo and grueling end.


Watching films like this, I somewhat understand why China has promised itself to not be at the mercy of anyone and decided to take their destiny with their bare hands. That era was marked as the "Century of Humiliation" under Japanese and Western subjugation. You'd want to understand them for their quest for global dominance. The Japs show these people Shégé sha.
Also a cautionary note to people who always love to preaching war and violence without fully grasping the consequences.

In a year where you had so many bottom barrel flicks like "Ghosted", "65", "Paint" etc? Yeah, The year was filled with so much shaft that this is easily one of the best movies out this year, in a stronger year, it might be debatable, but for a horrid year like this, an oscar shout is definitely valid. The big oscar prizes might elude it tho.

I don't think it has a chance in Best Director in comparison to Bradley Cooper, Nolan, Yorghos, Emerald Fennel, Greta Gerwig, Blitz Bazawule, Marty Scorcese etc.

But you're right, Best Original Screenplay is it's biggest chance since it's prolly the frontrunner alongside Saltburn since the majority of the big boys are all adapted screenplays.
