We want to explore how historians defined what is history. Many historians have defined the concept of history in different ways that suit their perspectives. But before we delve into the definition, let's take a look at notable historians that have shaped the nature of history. List of few notable historians Herodotus: wrote Histories, which established Western historiography. He is regarded as the father of History. Thucydides: wrote Peloponnesian War; an Athenian Historian and General; He is the the father of Modern History. Xenophon :an Athenian knight and a student of Socrates. Niccolò Machiavelli: an Italian Renaissance philosopher and diplomat. He is the author of The Prince. Voltaire: French Historian and Philosopher was Known for his Wit and his pointed social critique David Hume :best known for his highly influential system of philosophical empiricism, scepticism and naturalism FlaviusnJosephus: a Romano-Jewish Historian and Military Leader Plutarch: Greek Middle Platonist Philosopher, Historian, Biographer and Priest. He is known primarily for his Parallel Lives. Ibn Khaldun: a Sociologist, Philosopher, and an Arab Historian. He is regard as father of Historiography, and Sciences of History. Livy: a Roman Historian. Livy's most famous work was his history of Rome. Polybius: a Greek Historian of the Hellenistic Period. He is noted for his work The Histories, a universal history documenting the rise of Rome in the Mediterranean in the third and second centuries BC. Arnold J. Toynbee: he presented history as the rise and fall of civilizations, rather than the history of nation-states or of ethnic groups. Alexis de Tocqueville: a Historian Known for his works on 'Democracy in America'; 'The Old Regime' ; and 'The Revolution' Leopold von Ranke: a German Historian and a Founder of Modern Source-Based History. Sima Qian: Chinese Historian and Astrologer; the father of Chinese history Fernand Braudel: French Historian and Leader of the Annales School E. H. Carr: a Historian, Journalist, Diplomat, Writer, Political scientist, Professor. The author of 'What is History'. Jacob Burckhardt: a Swiss Historian of Art and Culture. Oswald Spengler: a German Historian & Philosopher known for his two-volume work: 'The Decline of the West' Thomas Carlyle: He is the founder of The Great Man Theory. Karl Marx: a German Philosopher and the writer of the Communist Manifesto. Edward Gibbon, English rationalist historian and scholar best known as the author of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Hugo Grotius: a Dutch Statesman And the Father of International Law A.L. Rowse: a British Historian R.G. Collingwood: British Historian. a practicing archaeologist best known for his work in aesthetics and the philosophy of history. Hugh Trevor-Roper: Baron Dacre of Glanton, British historian and scholar noted for his works on aspects of World War II and on Elizabethan history Cheikh Anta Diop: Diop's work is considered foundational to the theory of Afrocentricity. They are just too numerous to mention. These are just a few notable historians. |

I know 90% of them and had read about them U didn't include Tacitus, he was a first century historian and a contemporary of Jesus and Flavius Josephus He was the first to write about Roman empire(In his book called Annals)as the empire was founded barely 70years before he was born Pliny the Elder is missing too |
