Edwin Clark, convener of Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), has asked Presideent Bola Tinubu to call Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), to order over the political crisis in Rivers state.

BACKGROUND

Over the past few months, there has been a crisis in Rivers as a result of the feud between Siminalayi Fubara, governor of the state, and Wike, his predecessor.

In the wake of the crisis, the Rivers house of assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Fubara.

But the governor’s loyalists kicked against the impeachment moves.

Thereafter, 27 lawmakers believed to be loyal to Wike defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Subsequently, Edison Ehie, factional speaker of the Rivers assembly, declared the seats of the lawmakers who defected to the APC, vacant.

On December 18 2023, Fubara and Wike agreed to end the political feud between them following Tinubu’s intervention.

According to the resolutions reached at the end of their meeting with Tinubu, all parties to the crisis in Rivers agreed that all matters instituted in courts should “immediately” be withdrawn.

In the eight-point resolution signed by Fubara, Wike, and other Rivers stakeholders, it was agreed that all impeachment proceedings against the governor should be dropped “immediately”.

They also agreed that Martin Amaewhule should be recognised as the speaker while the 27 lawmakers who defected should be taken back as members of the assembly.

Weeks after the agreement, Wike in a visit to Victor Giadom, a chieftain of the APC, in Bera, Gokana LGA of Rivers, said the individual who wields political control in Rivers would be known at the appropriate time.

Alluding to the political crisis in Rivers, Wike said the person “in charge” of the state’s political structure would be unveiled soon.

However, Clark in a statement on Thursday, said Wike “has not rested” and “has not shown any regard and respect for Mr. President in his actions”.

“The continuous activities of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and immediate past Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Nyesom Wike, are clear indications that he is not ready for peace in Rivers State,” Clark said.

He has been to Rivers State a number of times, where he brags, making inciting and provocative statements.

“For instance, on Saturday 6th January, 2024, in Gokana Local Government Area, Rivers State, when he went to visit Hon. Victor Giadom, he reminded his audience that he is still in-charge of the State. How? Can there be two Governors in a State at the same time?

“All of Nyesom Wike’s actions, is no doubt a clear case of disobedience to Mr. President’s authority.

Let the truth be told to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nyesom Wike is not ready for any form of peace.

“Therefore, I call on the President, once again, to sanction Mr. Wike and call him to order to allow the elected Governor, Siminalaye Fubara, whom he, Nyesom Wike, claimed he made to govern Rivers State peacefully.”

In as much as we are peaceful Organization, we are also aware that Self Determination is not a crime if you are peaceful and that is what we are.
Because of LINO, Ijaw now have Ijaw Republic Suit For Referendum in Abuja High Court, we have given Ijaw Republic Documents to United Nations and we cannot allow the Nigerian Governor play with the mind of Ijaws in the name of bringing Chinese as new language when Ijaws do not learn Ijaws in Ijaw Nation.



We asked you to agree to the language engineering central dialect as being worked upon by LINO by writing to you 2 years plus ago but you were bent on the Kolokuma or nothing else thereby putting your Clan first before the rights of the whole tribe.



The language engineering that is inclusive of all Clans has been completed and we look for supports to launch it, but you'd rather enforce Chinese on Ijaws when Chinese cannot enforce your language on their people.



The Kolokuma you enforced in the name of Ijaw, nobody learns it.
No Clan would leave their dialect and learn your own.
Ijaw have 2,800 towns, villages and settlements and being the Governor of Bayelsa of which the word "BAYELSA" does not have direct meaning to the name of the tribe does not make you know it all.




If because of Ijaw you arrest me, I am here waiting for you.
No Ijaw language in schools, no balanced movie industry for employments,no balanced music industry, so many Ijaws cannot speak their language and do not even know anything about who is Ijaw or not and you decide to enforce Chinese on Ijaws when we haven't settled central one for us.



Ijaw belong to us all.
I am Kolokuma like you but I am not one sided.
I believe that the Ijaw Nation belongs to us all and every group deserve equal rights..




Even that Chinese you are enforcing on Ijaw was done through same language engineering that you refused supporting LINO on.
Igbos, Yorubas, Hausa among others also got theirs through language engineering.



In conclusion, the Lovers of Ijaw Nation Organization express total disapproval on the method you use in promoting Ijaw Nation because it doesn't potray the nation as filled with intellectuals and we fully stand against this clearly wrong approach of foreign language again.
English was enforced, then French followed and now you bring Chinese without thinking of you dying language that so many Ijaw Communities now speak other people's language.
We will stand against this until the needful get done.
