I thought they pulled out of ecowas how comes they are still active in AFCON

AFCON is Africa Cup of Nations. Mali and Burkina Faso are African countries, so why wount participate in AFCON? FIFA Law - Football is not mixed with politics. Even UK that has left EU still participate in EUFA competitions and Euro championship.

AU is the general body of all Africans state, while ECOWAS is strictly for West Africans states. If all things being equal, you can't be a member of AU if you are not a member of ECOWAS. All ECOWAS are AU members but not all AU members are ECOWAS members.

I don't think there's anywhere it's stated that a state has to be a member of its regional bloc to join AU, it's all a matter of choice. I believe they are both independent of each other. If AU was to stop existing today it would not affect the existence of ECOWAS.
