How Can Nigeria Mass Produce Food Instead Of Importing? by cooltola(op):
I recently visited the Federal ministry of Agriculture page online and was not really impressed. All I saw was a bunch of men and women taking photos in their agbada and native wear. While the prices of food is becoming high, I wonder what this ministry is doing about this? How can Nigeria mass produce food ? we have fertile lands in our country and the manpower to do so, the only problem is security and stealing from workers. Food should be cheap and ready available, the only reason why food price is very high is because many food items in Nigeria are imported from other countries. Many countries see Nigeria as a bank, they do not care if $1 is ₦200000, all they care is getting their money. They will price their food items based on their currency , not naira. And there is where the problem lies.
A hungry man will not care if the food is locally made or imported as long he eats. We should support our farmers in anyway or shape.

It is tragic, I wish something can be done against insecurity. If the average farmer cannot farm without fear of being killed, I do not expect food prices to go down anytime soon.

there should be a government/farmers partnership. Government should encourage rural farmers to form a cooperative. Government should provide tractors and other farms machinery to each local government in nigeria. Why government should encourage community farmers to form a cooperative. The cooperative should provide land in hectares through community while the government should provide a farm machinery service at a low cost to the cooperative.

Government should take security very seriously.

Government should also stock stop police from collecting money from food distributors on the high way

This is a good thread,I will appreciate it people can actually bring out practical ideas on how to solve this serious challenge facing Nigerians

My own take is as follows:

Agriculture,Aquaculture(fish farming) ,poultries and any type of farming actively should be given to Local Governments as pioneers
There are 774 Local Governments in Nigeria today and each local government in conjunction with state governments should be supported to allocate at least between 20 acres to 100 acres to farming
This farms should be granted financial and infrastructure support to be well structured
Houses,Farm settlements can be built and modern farm implements and tools equipped on each site
Individuals and private organisations can be encouraged to lease such settlements while the state governments will be responsible for providing infrastructure such as roads and logistics to move out products

As for the Federal Government, they will act as a guarantor of last resort
This in turn means the Federal Government will activate Food Silos across the Senatorial Districts of Nigeria, this silos will become a Food Bank where excess products from the Local Governments are bought by the Federal Government
Awards can be instituted every year, this awards will be given to Local Governments to encourage the best LGAs who are producing the most results
It will surely ginger the LGAs to compete against themselves for the Awards

Finally, this farm settlements will be secured, criminals, bandits and kidnappers will see these places as no go areas
I love your idea

If you live at home, you can personally consider producing and selling food.
Nairaland is full of people saying business plans as complaints.
