Speculators Undermine Measures To Stabilize Foreign Exchange Market – Ribadu by Ibrahimcoomasie(op): 6:59pm On Feb 20, 2024
The Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA has said that CBN’s proactive measures to stabilize the foreign exchange market and stimulate economic activities in the country is being undermined by the activities of speculators, both domestic and international.

The ONSA said these unpatriotic activities were “done through various channels, thereby exacerbating the depreciation of the Nigerian Naira and contributing to inflation and economic instability”.

Consequently, ONSA said it is working jointly with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to wade into the crisis with a view to combating the speculative activities arising from the market.

The Head, Strategic Communication, Office of the National Security Adviser, Mr Zakari Mijinyawa, made this known in a statement, titled, ‘Joint Effort Between ONSA and CBN to Safeguard Nigeria’s Foreign Exchange Market and Combat Speculative Activities’.

It reads, “In a concerted effort to safeguard Nigeria’s foreign exchange market and combat speculative activities, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) are joining forces to address challenges impacting the nation’s economic stability.

“The CBN’s proactive measures to stabilize the foreign exchange market and stimulate economic activities have been commendable.

‘However, the effectiveness of these initiatives is being undermined by the activities of speculators, both domestic and international, operating through various channels, thereby exacerbating the depreciation of the Nigerian Naira and contributing to inflation and economic instability.

,”Recall that, to address the exchange rate volatility, the CBN initiated a comprehensive strategy to enhance liquidity in the forex market, including unifying FX market segments, clearing outstanding FX obligations, introducing new operational mechanisms for Bureau De Change operators, enforcing the Net Open Position limit for commercial banks, and adjusting the remunerable Standing Deposit Facility cap.

“To reduce the pressure on the naira, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised a 7,000-man special task force across its 14 zonal commands to clamp down on dollar racketeers.

“Yet, recent intelligence reports have highlighted continued illicit activities within the Nigerian foreign exchange market, the ONSA and CBN are therefore embarking on this collaborative approach to tackle these infractions.

“This partnership will involve a coordinated effort with key law enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).

“The primary objective of this alliance is to systematically identify, thoroughly investigate and appropriately penalize individuals and organizations involved in wrongful activities within the FX market.

“By leveraging the expertise of these agencies, we aim to deter malicious practices, protect investor interests, and promote sustainable economic growth.

“This joint effort underscores the commitment of the Nigerian government to improving its Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) framework and exiting the grey list of the Financial Action Task Force.

“In addition, the efforts will make progress in ensuring a stable and transparent foreign exchange market, fostering investor confidence, and advancing the nation’s economic well-being.”

Story. That is why Nigeria economy is hard to recover because those handling our economy don't even understand how the economy is been run and the economic indicators for stability of the economy. Is Ribadu an economist or an economic adviser? He left security were he was appointed to handle and Nigerians are being killed everyday he never cares on how to stop that but are busy talking about the economy.

If the issue fx scarcity must end, the president has to be ready to step on toes.

Most bank officials, government officials, law makers, governors and the president himself are hoarding dollars in their various homes.

No body has the right to own dollars at all, it is not our legal tender.
Government should go after these dollar slaves, ransack their homes and jail anyone found with any foreign currency.

The government should end the activities of bureau de change with immediate effect and convert every dollar accounts in various banks to naira equivalents.
Government impose 300% tax on importation of luxury goods also.

Government should take the fight against corruption and economic saboteur serious .

Trials, prosecution and possible execution of these criminals should be done on live television for all to see and learn.
Government should include subjects that has to do with patriotism into school curriculum.

Our current leaders are a product of the society.

Ban BDC is too difficult to ask.

What we are seeing is run on the currency similar to Argentina in 2000s. When ordinary citizens dont have trust in their currency , they will keep on accumulating dollars .

Happened in Argentina ,USSR, Yugoslavia , Venezuela ,Zimbabwe etc .

People including Politicians ,businesspersons and ordinary people have no faith in Naira .

Unfortunately the worst is yet to come .

If Nigeria does not collapse and disintegrate or become a failed state by 2030 . It will be truly a miracle .

What business does this one have with the forex situation in a country battling serious insecurity issues?

You have bandits, kidnappers plus crude oil thieves to battle but you leave your job description to fight dollar and naira people
Re: Speculators Undermine Measures To Stabilize Foreign Exchange Market – Ribadu by mrvitalis(m): 7:39pm On Feb 20, 2024
Speculation is part of forex or any business in the world

Was there not speculators under PDP?
Was there not speculators when naira was stable?

The issue is not speculators the issue is this

Because of the rush to say we floated the naira.. Tinubu floated and unstable currency causing panic, people like me who don't need dollars in the near futures started demanding for dollars, which caused more instability

You guys don't even know the cause of the problem... There is no faith on the naira that's the fundamental issue

Tinubu government doesn't inspire faith at all

One of the solution to what we have on ground,
Then we have more....

The major problems are massive depreciation of naira, rising cost of production and what looks like galloping inflation.
We support most of the measures taken but not the modus operandi.
The provision of palliatives by FG through states was good but the states did not implement the palliatives simultaneously.
Some have not even been implemented till now.
So, the conditions have worsened for many citizens.
There’s a need to check what happens with palliative implementation in troubled states.

More solutions...
Improvement in farming, agriculture and industrial production will solve the problems with financial and fiscal interventions and reduction in security problems.
Then we start working on production with largely domestic inputs.
For exchange rate, there is a need to ban importation of some products relating to food and clothing, go for a moratorium on some debts, and increase oil and gas exports with proceeds to solve debt repayment and servicing with excess as reserves for intervention in the FX market.

Nigeria 🇳🇬 will be great in our lifetime.

We Rise ✔️

These thieves are the enemy of Nigeria. Until they all are gathered in a building and killed, Nigeria won't work.

Many of these politicians have several millions and billions stolen and kept in their various accounts, yet they claim economy isn't fine.

Tomorrow, they will still steal again. They all are grown up fools... Imagine at such age and position, stealing funds that are meant to develop the Country.

You can see something is wrong with their heads... Fools and very lazy sets of politicians... They see politics as a means to amass wealth... Lazy bastards
