Why do people still regard Gowon to be an elder statesman? Because he came to power on the back of a bloody coup that killed hundreds of people?

Because he kept Nigeria together at the cost of over 3 million lives?

Because he was a military dictator who abolished the 4 Region's Nigeria had, created 12 unitary states and abolished resource control?

For those who do not know, Gowon still holds the record as one of the greatest mass-murderers in African history. A man who came to power by the barrel of the gun is an elder statesman?
