Is Aba The Best Planned City In Nigeria? (Photos) by chnnmfl(op):
I have been to about 26 states in this country and have seen over 30 cities and towns in Nigeria. I can safely state that Aba is unarguably the best planned city in Nigeria by the British colonialists most especially the city downtown areas. If there is any other better planned city in Nigeria, pls state it here so that I can learn and relearn.

I think the British town planners used the "Cartesian grid" system in designing the city. The arrangement of lands and the design of the road networks are top notch. There are multiple routes to any location. Once you enter Aba town areas, obverse how all the roads looked the same with regular intersections and also how every building are in a single file order.

Abuja town areas is good. IBB tried in Abuja but it can't rival this. I'm talking in terms of proper urban planning not fancy buildings or skyscrapers.

Kudos to the British planners. What the city needs now are regular maintenance of the drainage system and more infrastructural projects.

"A cartesian grid as a street pattern provides interconnectedness. With its innate quality of being comprehensible, there is a possibility of availing multiple routes to any destination. Dispersion of movement (vehicular and pedestrian) is possible as almost all streets are the same, with no rigid hierarchical constructs. "

It is The dirtiest city
How is it better planned than any of the colonial.built areas like Port Harcourt Town,Ebute Meta,Yaba, Ikoyi,Lagos Island?
Does Aba have water distributed to its households? What planning are you talking about?
Does Aba have a sewage plant?
Is Ariaria part of the plan?
No way is Aba better planned than Port Harcourt Town or Lagos Island

Hater! Post the Google Earth images of those cities you mentioned let's check their grid systems.

The Aba Google Earth grid image that I posted above is not different from that of Manhattan or Barcelona city.

Infact it's way better than many European and American city grid systems that I have seen.

Post your own lets compare.

"In the seventeenth century, French philosopher René Descartes (1596–1650) defined a system by which we can describe any point in the universe. The Cartesian grid, a system of x-, y-, and z-axes, has since been used to calculate, standardize, optimize, and control space."

Why did your “British planners” not build covered drains with sidewalks like they do in Britain with money from your looted resources?

Why did they leave you with stinking open gutters and muddy roadsides?

Was that how they built their own in UK?

Ewu.

Don’t go to Rwanda and see how poorer Africans are building clean roads with sidewalks and covered drainage.

Stay there talking rubbish about thieving “British planners” who built stinking rubbish for you.

Sure, second only to Enugu shocked

Onitsha is another well planned city. The city needs a focus govt that will bring out its beauty the more.

Mumu, how is Aba “better planned” than Abuja?

Aba is not even better planned than Benin City, whose own AFRICAN planned design goes back a thousand years or more.

“Benin City’s planning and design was done according to careful rules of symmetry, proportionality and repetition now known as fractal design.

The mathematician Ron Eglash, author of African Fractals – which examines the patterns underpinning architecture, art and design in many parts of Africa – notes that the city and its surrounding villages were purposely laid out to form perfect fractals, with similar shapes repeated in the rooms of each house, and the house itself, and the clusters of houses in the village in mathematically predictable patterns.

As he puts it: “When Europeans first came to Africa, they considered the architecture very disorganised and thus primitive. It never occurred to them that the Africans might have been using a form of mathematics that they hadn’t even discovered yet.”

FCT is the most organised and planned part of the country! No other place comes close!

I love that in the FCT you don't get to see power cable poles all over the place!

Those who planned Abuja did a good job and El-Rufai did an even greater job for ensuring that people didn't flout the master plan.

Seconded!

Many years ago I spent like years in Aba. As a PH guy I can tell you for a fact that when it comes to good road network (not maintainance) Aba beat any city in Nigeria hands down. I know very few but not much about ABJ.

Almost 5 roads can lead you to a single location in Aba.

Plannin is different from development, you seem to be confusing both. If the pump the money they have invested in Abuja into Aba or make it the Capital of Nigeria, you won't recognize its a place in Nigeria.

The keyword is PLANNED not DEVELOPED.

How is planning MEASURED by what metrics so that one can now say Aba Is better planned than Lagos Island or Port Harcourt
Are we talking about the WHOLE OF ABA or part of it?
There is no way anyone can say the whole of Aba Is planned
I lived in Aba decades ago before Ariaria moved to its current location
So I have some knowledge of Aba.
If ever Aba had a master plan it has been almost totally jettisoned

I agree with you. Aba is dirty, I think we just have keyboard champions out there. I went there and it was like a market place. Other cities still try to arrange their capitals and major cities, but for Aba, mbannu!
