Important Update regarding power supply; Here’s a write up explaining the power supply process

Geometric Power and National Control Centre Map Out Programme on Electricity Supply to Aba

Geometric Power Ltd and the National Control Centre (NCC) at Oshogbo in Osun State have developed a timetable on how electricity will be supplied to all parts of the Aba Ring-fenced Area in Abia State following the commissioning of the Aba Independent Power Project (IPP) by Vice President Kashim Shettima on behalf of President Bola Tinubu last Monday.

Both parties reached the understanding yesterday following the visit of an NCC team on Thursday to the 188-megawatt Aba Independent Power IPP and the inspection of its facilities the next day.

The IPP includes the 188MW thermal plant located in the Osisioma Industrial Layout of Aba and the Aba Power Electric Company set up to distribute power to the Aba Ring-fenced Area which comprises nine of the 17 local government areas in Abia State.

“Commercial electricity supply to the nine LGAs began yesterday”, an engineer with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) who is conversant with the timetable, told our correspondent but advised that his name be concealed in the media because he did not have the authority to speak to the press on this matter.

“It began with the release of 7MW, and 7MW will be added every week until the commissioning phase is over”.

Experts call the method the ramp-up process of commissioning.

With 7MW injected into the system weekly, according to Isaac Ayodele, a former engineer with the defunct Power Holding Company (PHCN ) who is now an energy consultant in Lagos, “all 47MW from the first General Electric (GE) turbine will be supplied to consumers by the end of this month.

“This will be double the quantum of electricity currently supplied to the Aba Ring-fenced Area by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), which has been just 25MW for months”.

Ayodele continued: “By the end of April, power outages will be a thing of the past in all the 9 LGAs in Abia State serviced by Aba Power, Nigeria’s 12th electricity distribution company and the newest”.

The Geometric Power leadership has explained that the 47MW from the third GE turbine will be sent to the national grid, since Aba and its environs may not absorb more than 94MW right now.

There are indications, however, that the Southeast governors will press that the excess 47MW be sold to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for use in the five Southeastern states.

A source at the South East Governors Forum in Enugu who pleaded for anonymity told journalists: “We are finalising discussions on this matter”.

What this means is that from the end of April, if there is a national blackout in Nigeria, Aba people won't relate. grin

The excess power should be sold to EEDC so SE can have more stable power.

Is that 188MW enough to power one cement factory?

Can someone explain to me better.
The IPP is 188MW capacity, but from this write up only about 47MW will be produced..

One turbine is 47MW. There are four turbines of different capacities that will be switched on one after the other

The whole of Aba needs 94 MW but gets 25MW

Olodo, you had the energy expert saying Aba total need is less than equal to 98mw and you are here asking stupid question, please this is above Buhari and Tinubu level of understanding

No vex o. Dangote and BUA were on my mind when I asked. I heard they generate almost as much as we use in Nigeria.

Thank You.

So are all the turbine ready?
Will the 9 LGAs exhaust all the turbine when they are fully integrated. ?

How many MW will it take power 1000 household that have all the basics amenities.

And how many MW will it take to power about 100 average industries..?

The expert says Aba as a hole needs 92mw that means with the current industries and will still have excess of 48mw. And again there is nothing stopping them expanding to 1000mw in the nearest future. So let the industries keep coming because there is room for expansion.

This is true gbajue for SE States.

7MW per week will take 7 weeks of ramp up to reach 48MW capacity for the first GE Turbine. The release started this week. To reach 48MW will be end of April. The second turbine wil take another two months. Combined you will get 96MW. So wtf is he saying by end of this month?

If the other SE States will buy the excess generation this will be very good.

Worse case scenario, by July of this year Ibo can begin relocate to village and develop their towns. 24x7 electricity is the way to go.

Shame on any Ibo that will still prefer Lagos than returning home after July.

There are indications, however, that the Southeast governors will press that the excess 47MW be sold to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for use in the five Southeastern states

No, I don't support this. The excess should be used to service the remaining LGA's in Abia outside the 9 Aba ringed fence LGA's. At least they can enjoy 10-15 hrs of steady light everyday.
Far better than other parts of Nigeria
I know Ottti is wise enough to know what to do.

The excess should be diverted to aso Rock cocaine production company. In that way we can strengthen our naira by exporting TINUBU cocaine all over the world and earn more dollars to the economy

Otti said he has started talks with EEDC to hands off from the remaining LG so that the excess MW will be channeled to the remaining LG, most especially to Umuahia. But I think it will be a hard stuff to go by because that man Emeka Offor, is a greedy man

How many MW will it take power 1000 household that have all the basics amenities.

Well technology has greatly improved and many households appliances don't require much power nowadays.

For instance, an energy saving bulb is rated around 5-7w, let's assume a house has 30 of them that's just around 210w going with 7w. Compare this with when bulb were rated as 60w, 100w & 200w.

Also, many appliances are now using INVERTED technology which is replacing transformer with high power rated transistor, that's why you can see a deep freezer around 100w instead of above 200w before.

Now let's do the calculation: No matter how the household may consume electricity, I don't think it can be more than 20KW.

So that means, a 1000 households only require 20MW even if we increase it to 30KW it's still very low.

And how many MW will it take to power about 100 average industries..?

The same factors above applied to the industries only that industries need more power for machineries and probably more Air Conditioning (AC).

With this, let's assume an average industry needs about 300KW that's still around 30MW for 100 average industries.

So as the experts say that Aba will only need 92MW is not far from the truth.

I'm even sure that there is future expansion of households and industries in that 92MW.
