Ibadan has no specific culture or tradition like other Yoruba communities.

Those who are Ibadan indigenes today were from all parts of Yoruba land. They settled in Ibadan due to Ilorin Oyo wars popularly called Fulani war.

Warriors from all over Yoruba land gathered in Ibadan to lunch attack against the Ilorin warriors. Also, refugees from areas affected by the war also settled in Ibadan.

All Yoruba states have representatives in Ibadan as indegens. Oyo people make up the largest Yorubas in Ibadan among them are Ilorins, ijebus, iwos, ifes etc This is one of the reasons why Ibadan is made the capital of Yoruba land and the Kingship is rotational and not hereditary.

Original owners of Ibadan are the Egbas who are now occupying Abeokuta. They left Ibadan due to maltreatment by Baale Maye Okunade and went to settle in Abeokuta.


The late monarch is from Ali Iwo family, from present day Iwo Osun State. The family has been practicing Islam since 17th century. That's why when the monarch was buried according to Islamic rites, nay sayers kept quiet because it is normal in Ibadan.
