How many of you had always thought this animal was poisonous? (I did). Though from it's appearance you'd think this animal is poisonous because of its resemblance to a snake, Well, this animal isn't poisonous. This is a skink, a lizard belonging to the Scincidae, a family in the infraorder Scincomorpha.

As a young child, I was told that this animal will turn into a snake when it grows up.

As an adult, I just think it's disgusting.

Warri people call it 'snake servant' way back ... That anywhere this creature is, a snake is close by.

Snake lizard that was what we called it as kids. There's a saying that whenever you see this a snake is nearby. Be like say e don go extinct been years I last saw it

Nah. Salamander different from skink

They are called skink, they are neither poisonous nor venomous but they could bite if threatened.

Alayonbere mo ri e, mo ri e mo ri e, mo ri e, ko to dejo mo ti dabere. (Alayonbere I don sight you o but before you have the chance to turn into a snake, I have turned into a needle)

Actually there is a cousin of it, exactly like it but has a much more menacing appearance ( usually with orange, red lower part and tail.) That one is very very dangerous. It can kill humans and animals.

How I know?

Back when we were staying in Ibadan, a fairly large group of people started knocking on our gate frantically.... When we came out, they said a lizard like animal had entered our compound. I was wondering what kind of animal it cud be that put fear and excitement in the boys. I think my dad knew what it was cos he quickly let them in.

Come and see boys and men chasing this thing around. Like they just had to kill this thing now matter what.

Finally they were able to kill it with sticks. The thing was fast o. I remember the orange/green/red tail part.

Then I was told it can kill animals much larger that itself like goats meaning it's probably poisonous.


Over 30 years now, av only see it like only 2 or 3 times. Those few times I saw it, people made sure to try and kill it by all means.

There’s one smaller than this. Scary and disgusting reptile , I just couldn’t figure the reptile out all my life
