Ever since I relocated to Asaba, I have never for once bought ogbono seed in Asaba because I had a lot of it.

On Friday I decided to prepare the soup. I went to ogbo ogonogo market and told them to give me ogbono seed (Wild mango) , I noticed that people around were shifting away from me , some were making signs that I don't really understand.

I was wondering why people were behaving weired until an old woman called me into her shop and told me that Asaba people don't sell ogbono, in igbo we call it Omenala; its their tradition.

She went further to explain that people sell it secretly but it's not allowed. She told me to thank my God that I was not caught because if anyone had caught me I would have paid more than 25k and will also be disgraced.

I thanked her a lot and bought something else .

The next day when I got to my working place I explained my experience to the security Man who is from Asaba he told me that it's true.

I was very curious to know why, he never gave me a tangible reason but warned me not to try it again.

He did not stop there ,he also said that in Asaba market you should not be seen carrying yam in both hands, that it's either you put it in a bag ? Or you carry with a single hand .

The whole thing was very surprising to me but I have no option but to keep to their rules and belief.

If you are planning to go and sell ogbono seed in any Asaba market please you are on your own. Ogono seed is not sold in Asaba, even if you later buy it must be hidden .

Know this and know peace.

Why do you say taboos?
