UK Varsities To Layoff Workers, As Enrolment By Nigerians, Others Dwindle by HeatSeeker(op): 12:21am On Apr 03, 2024
By Adesina Wahab

No fewer than 15 universities in the United Kingdom have announced plans yo sack some workers and even stop running some courses because of the sharp decline in enrolment by foreign students including Nigerians.

According to a report by University World News, the sharp decline in foreign students enrolment was particularly felt at the postgraduate level.

The development is also connected to the decision by the Uk government to reduce international students, as some concessions given them that level have been whittled down.

Also, there are concerns too that the high cost of living being experienced globally may negatively affect enrolment of foreign students at the undergraduate level.

From the prestigious Russell Group Universities to mid-tier universities and Scottish institutions, the current situation is not sparing most universities.

Robert Gordon University (RGU) recently introduced a voluntary severance scheme in the face of staff redundancy due to its financial difficulties as a result of a notable decline in international student enrollments, a consequence of post-Brexit alterations in UK immigration policies.

RGU cited escalating cost pressures and a considerable reduction in public funding as contributing factors.

They cannot have it all!

Issue student visa and allow black population to increase in UK.

Dont issue visa, and your universities will die a natural death.

How many British citizens can afford university fees 🤣🤣🤣

Moreover, that morafvcker called Rishi Sunak needs to be stoned to death. The fvckin immigrant has now become anti immigrant

They will be alright las las.
It'll help us reduce the brain drain that will ultimately force people to use their education to solve our own critical problems and earn big from the solution they provide.
It's a mixed bag of blessings.
May God bless Nigeria for ever! Check my signature for free stuffs!

This won't reduce brain drain in anyway. Nigerians going to the UK to study aren't really going to study but just want an opportunity to work and study while bringing their families along. The actual brain drain are through the skilled visa they issue to professionals and those are still very much in vogue

an irony it is, like using a ladder to get to the top and tossing the ladder away from the wall so others do not have same privilege.

Not that I even like our people going there to work, but painting a picture as if it's us or other immigrants that's making their country or economy to tank is not it at all, the kind of work our people won't even go near here is what they boldly do over there.
You see graduates, MSc holders doing glorified house boy/girl or nanny over there, such whom some of them even have here in naija serving them, people resigning from their jobs spending millions to go and study over there to eventually be doing such jobs is still surprising, Quite rare seeing japarians doing professional jobs outside of anything relating to care jobs, warehouse or cleaning, but what we hear most is immigrant this immigrant that from their hosts...

We blame it on our own leaders and country sha...if not our people won't be subjected to such, generally we are hardworking and good people, we deserve something good.

The way y'all like to infuse Nigeria into everything is laughable. Nigeria doesn't have the highest number of foreign students in the UK, but titles like always makes it about all us. Instead of just saying international students, you find a way to single out Nigeria just for sensationalism.

Nigerians are the ones patronizing them.
