How many ions are formed during the dissociation of 500 molecules of carbonic
acid, if it dissociates in the first degree by 20%, and in the second degree by 1%?

Explain your answer.

1. First degree dissociation:

20% of 500 molecules dissociate, which is 0.20 * 500 = 100 molecules.
Each dissociated molecule forms one hydrogen ion (H^+) and one bicarbonate ion (HCO3^-), so a total of 100 * 2 = 200 ions are formed.

2. Second degree dissociation:

1% of 500 molecules dissociate, which is 0.01 * 500 = 5 molecules.
Each dissociated molecule forms one hydrogen ion (H^+) and one carbonate ion (CO3^2-), so a total of 5 * 2 = 10 ions are formed.

Therefore,
The total number of ions formed during the dissociation of 500 molecules of carbonic acid is 200 + 10 = 210 ions.

Alabidtailor:
How many ions are formed during the dissociation of 500 molecules of carbonic
acid, if it dissociates in the first degree by 20%, and in the second degree by 1%?

Explain your answer.
The formula for carbonic acid is H2CO3. When it dissociates in the first degree, it forms two ions - H+ and HCO3-. When it dissociates in the second degree, the HCO3- ion formed in the first degree dissociation further breaks down into H+ and CO32-.

So, if 500 molecules of carbonic acid dissociate in the first degree by 20%, it means that 20% of the molecules produce two ions, and the remaining 80% do not dissociate. Therefore, the total number of ions formed in the first degree dissociation is:

500 x 20% x 2 = 200 ions

If the same 500 molecules dissociate in the second degree by 1%, it means that 1% of the HCO3- ions produced in the first degree dissociation further dissociate to form two more ions, and the remaining 99% do not dissociate. Therefore, the total number of ions formed in the second degree dissociation is:

200 x 1% x 2 = 4 ions

So the total number of ions formed during the dissociation of 500 molecules of carbonic acid is:

200 + 4 = 204 ions.
