BlueRayDick: The only way to win a match is to outscore your opponent. You cannot out-cleansheet an opponent - if both teams keep a cleansheet, it's called a draw. West Ham have conceded 6 goals more than Chelsea this season and are higher in the log with -6 goal difference. Newcastle that has conceded the same 52 goals are in 6th place. Villa and Spurs that have conceded just 3 goals less than Chelsea are fighting for UCL positions. When you look at the trends, except for a TWO outliers like West Ham and Manyoo, 6 out of the 8 teams above Chelsea have outscored Chelsea this season, with half of then conceding around the same number of goals we've conceded. Meanwhile, nobody from 10th place down has scored up to us, with a a couple of teams having actually conceded less than Chelsea this season. Without resorting to absolutist and reductive arguments like attack good, defence bad, it is clear to me that Chelsea’s problems stem not from an inability to lock up shop, but an inability to kill off games..which are slightly overlapping but entirely different concepts. That's why I focus very heavily on Sheffield in my analysis. A team like Chelsea should be expecting to outscore rhe team with the worst defensive record in EPL history. Even if they score 1, they should be loaded with 2 more in response. At one point yesterday, Burnley had the same 2-1 scoreline that we held against Sheffield. The difference is, instead of wasting attacks or not even attacking at all (Nicolas Jackson didn't even bother to shoot on or off target that day), Burnley went and pumped them 2 more. If the 19th placed team in the league can beat Sheffield 9-1(home and away) this season, then how cam we be discussing defending against such a team? That's football anathema. Thank God we all saw what Jackson did yesterday. Tomorrow now, someone will start spinning a narrative that City defence locked up shop for a 1-0 win, instead of tbe truth that if Jackson wasn't such a disgraceful attacker, we might have won that match 3-1 9 Likes 3 Shares |

swiz123:Thats what Im complaining about. They assembled a team of boys that think winning trophies is strange. No ambition. They just play for fun and money...then go clubbing and post pics on IG. Any player that is not bothered when his team loses is a stupid player and doesnt deserve to be in such team. Sadly, these are what we have in chelsea now. Silva is a born winner. He have tested trophies and knows the feelings...so it pains when he loses. Madueke? Wetin concern that one with trophies. 1 Like |

Ibime: First and foremost, I’m not saying we don’t need to fix the attack as much I would have loved to see changes at the back, all I’m saying is that the attack are doing relatively better, despite their shambolic performances. Are they letting the defence down? This season we have taken the lead 25 times and have conceded an equalizer on 12 instances, translating into a lead-defending rate of 52% (for an opponents' equalizing rate of 48%). In the same vein, our defense have conceded 22 goals which gave the lead to the opposition - 22! For the proponents of outscore your opponent theory, of the 22 times that Chelsea's opponents have taken the lead, we have managed to score an equalizer on 12 instances, translating into an equalizing rate of 55%, which is pretty higher than the league’s average value of 44%. Our lead-defending rate of 52%, is lower than the league’s average value of 56% this season. A far cry by all standards. Numbers don’t lie. As much as our attack have been profligate, the defense have shown over and over again that it CANNOT protect a lead. I’m not even talking about spurning chances, just to concede latter, I’m talking about taking the lead and ending up throwing it away. No matter how you want to see it, the defense is contributing nothing in our run. Someone is saying that goals are everything in football, but I just have to ask him what’s the essence of those goals/leads when they can’t be protected? Football requires a high level of pragmatism, not fantasies. This isn’t Ipukulubiye Dolphins vs Terrible Winners, this isn’t fantasy football. For a team that has a healthy overall scoring rate of 84% and an alarming conceding rate of 81%, you need no soothsayer to point to you where the problem majorly exists. Game management? How many times have we tried and failed with it? Our recent game against man utd, is a good case study. Went 2 goals up within 15minutes, but ended up chasing an equalizer and an eventual late winner. Bin that entire backline, get a proper CF and we are clear. EOD. 5 Likes 1 Share |

nihilistjnr: Baba . Ur attack still manages to score over 1.5 goals almost every match , but ur defence ship in goals almost every game. Ur attack as bad as it is scored 2 goals against Arsenal that has the best defense in the league . That shows ur attack is not as bad as u want to assume . But guess what ? Ur defense still allowed arsenal score score 2 goals . Anyways I believe both ur attack and defense should be fixed sha for u to compete with other top teams 6 Likes |

BlueRayDick: I won't lampoon your ignorance, since you are not a Chelsea fan and obviously you don't watch our matches regularly. Even the best defence can still concede and that's exactly one of the reasons your team is out of Ucl as from the other end, you failed to score a goal. Let that sink in. |

Andrey Santos finally lost a game as a starter for Strasbourg, who fell 1-0 to Lille courtesy of a huge defensive error. Santos was one of their best performers - joint highest rated on sofascore. 43/51 passes 4 tackles 2× dribbled past 7/12 ground duels won (most) 1/2 aerial duels won 2 key passes (most). 1 big chance created Another solid performance for our boy. Strasbourg themselves have been in really good form of late, and that was shown here by the fact that they only lost due to a poor error at the back, limited Lille to just six shots and created more chances. |
