Omoyele Sowore, a prominent Nigerian activist, has called for the prosecution of the American International School (AIS) in Abuja for alleged money laundering involving former Kogi state governor Yahaya Bello and his former Chief of Staff, Ali Bello.

In a post on X, Sowore alleged that Bello and his aide laundered close to $1 million under the guise of paying “future school fees” for their children at AIS.

He argued that similar to the American justice system, the AIS should face charges instead of simply refunding the money.

He further urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to ensure that the school discloses all such payments made by Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs). Sowore believes that investigating such payments could reveal widespread financial misconduct and calls for AIS to be converted into a public school if found guilty.

His words: “The American International School @AISAbuja , where fugitive former Kogi state governor Yahaya Bello @OfficialGYBKogi and his former Chief of Staff, Ali Bello, laundered close to $ 1 million in the name of paying “future school fees” of their wards should be charged and prosecuted for money laundering instead of being allowed to refund the money.

“This is the way the American justice system treats such cases on US soil, the @officialEFCC must also ensure the school discloses all such school fees paid by Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs).

“I am sure there are a lot of discoveries that would be uncovered such that the school could be converted to a public school instead of its criminal connivance with financial criminals fleecing the Nigerian public across board, these must necessary apply to these ultra-expensive private schools in Nigeria.”

If EFCC did not probe Bola Tinubu and allowed him to use the trillions of Naira he looted from Lagos state from 1999 to 2023 to buy his way to become Nigeria's President, then nobody should touch Yahaya Bello, he and many other politicians and civil servants were inspired by political Thieves like Bola Tinubu's looting of Lagos without repercussion

Nothing concern USA indeed because the school is in Abuja. Learn to read so you can make informed comments...its a very poor trait for a man to be misyarning like this.

Money laundering school

For the first time I have to agree that Sowore is making sense. This school might have been acting as a money laundering partner for these big guys in government. How can you pay six years school fees in advance for kids still in primary school and not yet in your school.
If this wasn't discovered, the ex governor will simply go back there next year and terminate the contract and collect 80% of the money. Leaving the rest for the corrupt school officials to pocket the rest. Deal done!
Teachers there won't even know what's happening. Only the owner, principal and accountant will be involved. It's possible they do this too for other Politcians who pay fees for non existent children and later refund a percentage of it to the criminal when required.

The lawlessness in the Nigerian justice and legal and social system is mind-blowing. How could citizens be bold enough to loot public funds and the justice system will be so weak to try and find them guilty. You can't try this rubbish in the advanced countries whose legal system is very strong like UK. Corruption is everywhere but that of Nigeria is beyond human comprehension.

That is what the likes of Tinubu and this present government has done for them to be in power, they constantly weaken the institutions to grab power or remain in power...

What brought majority of the present people in power today into office is weak institutions, look at INEC giving candidacy to people who did not contest primaries, EFCC selecting cases based on political vendetta...

Ask yourself if the likes of Tinubu, Wike, akpabio and so on were to vie for positions in places like Canada or UK with all the corruption cases on them, won't they be in prison by now?

Nobody should expect Nigeria to get better,a governor after his tenure quickly rush to the courts to get injunction not to be questioned what kind of law do we have in this country,who drafted the law for Nigeria for God sake.

Good. If not that Nigeria is a lawless country, Why will a school in Nigeria be allowed to receive payment in dollar instead of Naira? It's not obtainable in other countries, you pay in their local currency.
