Twelve Malawians have been deported from Israel after leaving the farms where they were working to get higher salaries elsewhere.

The 12 Malawians were among more than 40 foreign workers who were arrested while working at a bakery in Tel Aviv last week.

The workers, who were part of a labour agreement between Israel and Malawi, were unhappy with working conditions in the agricultural sector and found work in a bakery instead.

Israel ambassador to Malawi Michael Lotem told the BBC: "Anybody who violates his visa terms will be deported – as easy as this, as in any country.

I hope it will be a sign for others that it is better to stick to the job. Nobody forced them to come, they came to do a job, they should do the job that is all.

Last week, Benzani, a Malawian working in Israel, told the BBC that some of his compatriots working on other farms were being paid less than half the minimum wage in Israel.

"The minimum wage in Israel is 32 shekels ($8.60; £6.85) an hour, but some of us are being paid 18 to 20 shekels an hour."

Benzani said many of them had signed contracts which said they would receive $1,500 a month.

Benzani is not one of those who were deported.

Mr Lotem said that rather than leaving the farms and breaking the conditions of their visas, they should have lodged a complaint.

“If someone thinks that he is not getting what he deserves, there is a hotline and a phone number they can call

"Violating the law is not the answer.

"The Israeli police shows zero tolerance to illegal activity especially these days when we have so many other troubles,” Mr Lotem said.

Those deported were part of a labour drive by the Israeli government last year to fill a shortage of agricultural workers following the attacks on Israel in October 2023 by Hamas.

This led Israel to stop giving permits to Palestinians to work on its farms, while 10,000 migrant farm workers - mostly Thailand nationals - left Israel after war broke out.

More than 200 Malawians went to Israel, while Kenya agreed to send 1,500 workers.

The announcement of the deal sparked mixed reactions in Kenya, with some concerned about their safety.

The two governments said it would help reduce unemployment in their countries.

Mr Lotem also said that a new agreement had been signed for another 3,000 Malawians to go and work in Israel.

why them no come Nigeria?

Secondly, the people were not told how this kind of contract job works, if they were paid only 18 shekels out of 32, then they should have asked their government because the remaining 14 shekels must have been paid to them. Seems they were not properly informed, hence the deportation.

Boy listen..

You see back then in school you have 2 types of people
1. The students that know the rules and follow it to a default
2. The students that breaks the rules then start crying victim when punished.

You came into a Foreign land with a WORK visa
A Contract with all the rules and the punishment of deportation if you break the rules. It is all in the Contract

A work contract that states you are coming into this country to work for company A.
If you enter country then run away to work for company B.
You have broken the WORK contract which the penalty for breaking such rule is deportation.
This is signed and written in their contract

But trust Africans to go and break the rules .
Because you can do anyhow in Africa and nothing will happen.
Welcome to Civilized nations you jihadist monkey.

You go another man country break their law
Them cry victim when they get punished.

The reason Europe don't like hiring Africans is that once African enter Europe he will break contract and run to another place.

So save your propaganda and grab a shovel and continue digging for dirt to lay on Israel.

You go dig for 365 days till you finally find sense inside that hole you are digging.

I'm sure if you abandon your work here in Nigeria, and go to work for another company when you're supposed to be in your office, your employer would call it freedom, and double your salary.
No wonder they say hatred is a form of witchcraft. It beclouds common sense.

I'm deeply ashamed at the Whole country of Malawi. We were told our forefathers in Africa were ignorant when the white man came.to pack Africans Into ships and ferry them all over the world to be used as slaves on plantations.
It's bemusing and satanic that 2000 years after the exploits of Mungo Park, some African leaders will brazenly and without any iota of shame allow their citizens to be boarded on slave planes and taken again to another plantation to work for the White Man.
Sincerely Africans are the most shameless people on Earth,I weep for this continent of Africa,I weep because in this same write up, another shameless government official is trumpeting that there's another set of 1500 Malawians ready to board the slave plane to work on the white man's plantation.
If our forefathers were ignorant, these set of New slave masters are the most wicked and despicable set of Black imbeciles.
Why can't these shameless imbecilic government officals force Isreal to open its borders to allows Palestinians back to farm on their plantation or bring their farms to Malawi and export whatever they produce.
If this isn't slavery,I don't know what other name to call it.
God bless my Wonderful country Nigeria.
God bless Africa.
