Good evening experience agriculturalists/farmers.

I planted about 15 rows of maize in my backyard. They were germinating fine until I arrived home this night to see them all dugged up and disappear.

The hole in which I planted each seeds has been left open and empty with no signs of the young plants anywhere.

I am suspecting my neighbor's two chickens as been behind the painful act but I am not sure yet. My backyard is not fenced. So the chickens do regular wandered from my neighbor's house at the back into my backyard.

Am I right in my suspicion or could another animal like bush rats be behind the destruction of my Germinating seedlings?

I presently isn't buoyant enough to afford to fence off my backyard farm, so I will appreciate if there are alternative solutions I can apply before replanting a new set of seeds.

I presently have a big heap of dead leaves and grasses in my front yard and I am wondering if I could spread those around the backyard farm to make a low temporary fence/barrier?

I am not a farmer I took great effort to clear the backyard and do the planting which has now turned to waste.

Since you don't have the funds to fence ur backyard yet, I'll advise you round the place u planted ur maize with a net.

Oga, use treated seeds.


Also buy seeds and feed the chickens for the first one week of your germination to take their attention away from your farm. Shikena !

Even with a fence, if they are local chicken, they will fly through.

Its either rats or monkeys that perpetrate that evil.

Get a security guard on 24/hours
By the time you kill 3 of them they will stop coming

It will kill and dry them like something died of aids.
