The ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in Anambra has won 20 chairmanship seats out of 21 in Saturday’s local government elections in the state.

The Acting Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, Sylvester Okonkwo, announced the results in Awka on Sunday.


Mr. Okonkwo said the elections were not conducted in Nnewi North Local Government Area due to the late arrival of materials in the area.

Presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, Tuesday said litigations stopped him from conducting local government council election in Anambra state when he was governor.

He stated this Monday in Benin City during the LP rally to drum support for the party’s candidates ahead of the September 2, local government election in Edo state.

Obi was governor of the South-east state between 2006-2014 and was hugely criticised for failure to conduct local government elections at the time.

The former governor said the development of any country is domiciled in the local government areas, hence it is the nearest to the people.

He added: “I was prevented by litigations from conducting local government elections for over six years.

“But I can tell you that I used the money to develop the local government areas. We paid our development counterparts funding before any state in Nigeria
