1. Free transport to work

2. Subsidised homes. Like the ones built by shagari in the 80’s . Little one two & 3 bedroom houses. They would pay N5000.00 per month

3. Build large cooperative stores that would sell groceries at rock bottom price. That means government would buy fruit and vegetables from farmers and subsidies them. Including meat rice& fish.

It can be done. There would be know reasons to increase wages which would eventually lead to a runaway inflation. The 650,000 labour is asking for would lead to runaway inflation just like in Zimbabwe.
But oga economist the outrageous emoluments of judges, politicians and hangers on will not fuel inflation, only that of the masses will fuel inflation because they are the only ones that goes to the market
The economist that wrote the text book you read did not factor in Nigeria situation, so you should factor them in when making your proposals

Op has a point.

There is nothing communist about 2 of his suggestions. The one about groceries is unlikely to be practicable. Transport can be subsidised rather than being totally free.

I am a capitalist, but given the level of poverty, homelessness, and despair in the USA - the poster child of capitalism - and the fact that 50% of those earning $100,000 or above in the US live from hand to mouth (despite that being a high salary), I have come to believe that the purest form of capitalism is a recipe for despair. The only true winners are the super rich and the upper middle classes who set the rules of the game and continue to get richer. The majority of people work, work, and work with little to show for it.

A government must be able to intervene in certain areas when the wanton greed that capitalism inevitably breeds is getting out of hand.

A couple of months ago, Cement manufacturers were selling cement to distributors at around N7,500, but these people were selling to consumers for N11,000 and above. That's just one out of many examples of unbridled greed.
So the level of poverty in the USA is 11.5%
And many people live from hand to mouth because of personal financial decisions.
The average American spend $1100 on coffee
$1800 on clothing.
$3,600 on eating out
And much more for vacations and holidays.
Most people in America are broke because of lifestyle.

Op... Stop this nonsense abeg.

How much does Tinubu take home in salary and allowances every month?!! Even his wife?!!

Why can't you demand that all government appointees and elected leaders bring their monthly wages and allowances to the same level of civil servants, and apply these principles?!!

Why must it always be the average citizens that must keep adjusting and suffering just to maintain the greed and excesses of those in power?!!

You people are irritating in this dumb attempt to always cover poor leadership.
my brother I tire for Nigerians, they encourage their leaders to trample upon them like slaves,as if they are less human beings and deserves little or nothing, they don't ever look at how the civilised world treat their citizens, reason I have no hope in these country and gradually try not to put my mind in anything Nigeria again, because anybody that dies for Nigeria die for nothing

Even school fees is more than 30k.

You can't avoid increasing salaries. The above benefits can still be done. After all, we pay taxes here.

Without an increase in salary, people are just living from hand to mouth

So if the Government should propose such you would accept.
Let them convert all and pay it cash because they can't be trusted.
If Nigerian Government should do it then it wouldn't last more than a month and heavy looting will set in

You are asking the wrong question here knowing what your average politician who has been occupying political office since 1999 is packing month in month out. Senior civil servants are not left out. Nigeria as a country is making more than enough money to make citizens comfortable through govt welfarism campaign. Corruption is what we need to kill, not that we are not generating enough revenue
You're right Nigeria has enough money to finance an expansive welfare state without you paying more taxes. They should be giving free universities, health care and housing. The current revenue they generate isn't tiny at all hence ignore the fact they chronic shortages in petrol, dilapidated schools and infrastructure decay.

In order to subsidise to feed you, government will buy cheap from farmers, who will then find it unprofitable to plant food so food gets imported at inflated prices.

Trust me. You are worth far more than 30k a month or you at least ought to be.
Lol who are the people even liking your post. That's not how subsidy works. The government agency will buy cheap from farmers and sell cheap to citizens, then pay the farmers the subsidy (the balance) from our budget yearly or monthly.

That will mean the government will probably have to accrue debts inorder to feed it's citizens and it's not a bad thing IF the Nigerian govt were also investing in agricultural sector to ensure that we can feed ourselves and eventually export so we pay back our debts.

When such a thing happens, even N30k will have so much value for the common man.

But Nigeria is operating a completely elitist govt, they don't give a damn about the citizens! Reminds me of Cheik Anta Diop description of Roman Empire in earlier times. Where the Patricians(elites) feasted every night whilst the plebs(citizens) were starving to death and refused ownership of land to even farm.

Workers get communist wages but spend ultra-capitalist, where prices rise daily.
Nor be juju be that?

Minimum wage increment should be gradual but should end up around 125 to 150k within liker 2 years. Govt can even use it to campaign from mid-2026 to early 2027 as an achievement.

And govt should try to reduce inflation. Food, fuel and transportation are the main drivers of inflation in 9ja. Govt should look at those areas to tackle inflation.
This goes to show we're far from becoming an industrial nation....

Re: Maintain Minimum Wage At N30,000.00 But Give Workers 3 Things??? by Christlike01: 2:11pm On May 16, 2024
The truth is that there is zero productivity behind the current minimum wage of N30,000.00 being paid by the government. The so-called civil servants at all levels, especially state civil servants, are quite lazy and totally unproductive. They don't deserve a Kobo more than what they're earning currently. Giving them more money will only increase inflation in the country because there won't be any corresponding increase in the productivity level to back it up.

Instead of increasing the so-called workers' salary, the government should invest heavily in agriculture, the transportation system, and the energy sector.Increasing workers' salary will bring about more hardship in the land as inflation will sharply go up. For instance,if the government increases minimum wage to,let say,N100,000.⁰ today, trust me,the current value of N100.00.⁰ will immediately drop to N10.00! The informal sector workers - market women and men, transporters, Artisans,etc- will ensure that!

We have to bear in mind that it is not everybody that earns government salary or works for the government. Whatever government at any level may want to do must be something that will positively impact the lives of the generality of all Nigerians;not the govt workers alone!

Schools should be free.
Housing Loan for workers should be at a low rate.
Provide incentives such as land and tax breaks business start ups for the first 10 years.
Subsidies and free stuff should be for disable, children and the elderly.

We have inflation already, let workers be paid minimum living wage. How do you expect people to continue living on 30k minimum wage when the price of bag of rice has jumped from 7k to over 80k?
This is not the minimum wage inducing inflation, this is about inflation inducing minimum wage

We are in the capitalist world economy. You can find these things during the communist era. Oga, 99% of the world will work for just 1%. This is how the present world is currently running.

However, we may not be in that 1% and at the same time escape the curse and pain working for that 1%. Build your wealth and live a moderate life. Grow your food and maintain good health.

There's nothing difficult about what you're proposing. In fact if you take a moment to understand how rich Nigeria and Africa really is, you'd see that Africans and Nigerians deserve to live like royalty that we are. Everything is already taken care of for us. We have lands and oil.
What is inflation lol

But the thing is, Africa is still enslaved and it has African elites as it's "civil servant to white corporations". Should Nigeria operate anything resembling a communist or socialist society, the white men will not be able to get their oil, labour, and other resource for cheap anymore and of course Nigerian elites will not be able to afford white men products to make themselves feel white.

So you must understand that before you think economically, you must think politically. Anything you want from Africa is possible but we the citizens must organise politically to take back our nation, only then can we decide what economic system we want to adopt.

In a Capitalist Nigeria, even simple price control will take a million meetings before it is then rejected lol FOLLOW MOPCENTRE ON INSTAGRAM, a political movement for the people.

What do you mean by the bolded?
theredaddy:
The last point you raised, govt subsidizing food will only do more harm than good, its something we've witness when govt gave out palliatives last time
Govt buying up food product from farmers will creat unwarranted sarcity and boost inflation that leaves the real market to scramble what is left of supply which automatically hikes in price

Above all, subsidy intervention will only brew corruption and even the foods stuff will be held up in warehouses and what will be dispense can't even serve 30% of Nigerian population .. whats the point

See no country can survive if they are under three nations sanction e.g

Eu

Same sanction they meted on Venezuela.

Not salary. Sanction is the most potent weapon that can destroy a nation faster than expected...same thing is happening to Iran and Turkey lately.

If you are a good economist inflation is the easiest thing to curb. Find what is causing the inflation

1 transport cost that should be taking off once fruit & vegs are purchase & warehouse in the cooperatives. The cooperatives on the hand would sell to the people at subsides rate. Bingo inflation over

2. Gasoline since government cig powered Lorrie’s would be doing the delivery to the cooperatives that would be reduced to the bearest minimum .
Add end insecurity or protect our farmers or the government farm in large scale (mechanised farming) so that enough supply hits the market
Re: Maintain Minimum Wage At N30,000.00 But Give Workers 3 Things??? by Love800(m): 2:52pm On May 16, 2024
What is purchasing power?
modernWays:
Alot of mechanised farms will spring up to produce at cheaper rate. Besides, farms products from farms are usually cheap, it is greedy middlemen that made everything difficult for the final consumers.

Salary increasment in Nigeria has proven to be a waste of time, your so call 650k per month could amount to nothing again in six months time.

Let focus on purchasing power if naira instead of unnecessary creation of another problem by salary increasment.
