Can someone explain to me why almost all the region in Nigeria is Classified as North? Why will there be North Central and no South Central States? Is this Polical Map or Geographical Map.

I'm waiting for full explanation

At amalgmation in 1914 Nigeria consisted of the Northern and Southern protectorates and Crown colony of Lagos.

It was in 1939 that the Southern provinces, as they then called, were regrouped into the Eastern region, with headquarters in Enugu and the Western Region with headquarters in Ibadan. While the Northern provinces became the Northern Region.

Thus at independence in1960 we had the Eastern, Northern, Western Regions and the Federal Capital Territory of Lagos.

Politics of the British government to control the more educated and revolting South!
The North was predominantly cooperative with their antics, hence everything was skewed towards them holding fort for the colonial masters in government.

It was because of the Fulani jihad, most of the Middlebelt fell to the Fulani hegemony using the Nupes and Ilorin on the western end and on the eastern end nasarawa and some plateau tribes fell to the Fulani, including though much debated the tiv area of todays Benue.

These areas were under the Fulani hegemony so they naturally fell to the northern region

Land mass that bokoharam and Bandits don take over
Re: BIGGER NORTH Smaller South by DMerciful(m):
Before the British came, the Fulani jihad was conquering the area now called Nigeria. They started from Sokoto and coming down South.
Their intention was to get to the sea. However, the British stopped them at the Kwara , kogi, Benue border.

That line is called the Kabba line and upward of that line is referred to as North and below that line as South.

The North formed the Northern Protectorate under Britain and the South formed the Southern Protectorate under Britain. These were separate countries before the 1914 amalgamation, a terrible mistake!

It was the Yorubas of Ibadan that stopped the Jihad on the western flank, not the British.

If they collected Ilorin, they'd eventually get to the lagoon

What happened that led to the emergence of a Fulani Emir in Ilorin was an internal coup, not a pitched battle.
And like I said earlier, the Yorubas stopped the Jihadists advance in the west when they defeated the Fulanis at the battle of Osogbo.
The Yorubas were on the cusp of marching on Ilorin itself when the british arrived and brought back the Emir who had fled the city after several years of living in fear and whose powers had been practically dismantled by the powerful Baloguns. The British did this in order to facilitate indirect rule through a single political figurehead (The Emir AKA Oba Ilorin)

What's the big deal? The North only has more land.

We have to remember that the Nigeria we see today only came about because the British decided to merge two protectorates that were next to each other. That North/South divide still exists

Had the British not amalgamated both protectorates in 1914, what you call Northern Nigeria and Southern Nigeria would have been two different countries today

That's how the British initially created Nigeria, starting with three Region's, following the three main ethnic groups

Everything around the Benue River going up became the North, or Northern Region. Everything below it, west of the River Niger, became the Western Region, while everything east of the Niger became the Eastern Region
