√8 is √4 x √2 meaning 2√2

X^½ + X^½= 8^½

(note "^" is symbol for "raised to the power of"...)

2(X^½) = 8^½

X^½= (8^½)/(2)

X= (8^½)²/(2)²

X=8/4

X=2
