You are very correct, but rails are an essential component of industrial development.

In my opinion, the first focus should have been on building cargo rails to connect industrial centres/areas. That would have been more profitable, reduce the wear and tear of having large vehicles on the roads and improve road safety.
Your brain is very sound. Our politicians and their advisers and their own advisors are dullards in agbadas. Doing this will also reduce the number of accidents caused by those rickety trucks.

Question is does it make sense to borrow and build a project you would subsidize when you are already struggling paying old debt
Governance and borrowing are 5&6 know these and know peace. You can borrow to build a project and still subsidize it, "when you're already struggling paying old debt"? NO and YES.

: As a businessman when you're struggling to pay your old debt you can still borrow more to balance things up, why not as a president/governor.

Successful businessmen and women around the world are those who are not afraid of loans/borrowing.

The main problem is the borrowed money are looted but no problem in borrowing.

Everyone should just focus on how to make a better living and secured future for his/her born and unborn children and stop hoping for when Nigeria will turn to Demark.

So how do you balance things up as a president? Build infrastructure? Lmao

Economics should be made compulsory

The profitable route from day 1 would have been Lagos to SE route but the govt prefer politics to economic growth

MEEVEET:
What I would do is simple
Borrow money 200 million dollars if I get

I would call on my state people who are ready to invest in the state health sector... Get an interest free loan of 1 to 2 million dollars
Special consideration would be given to none profit organizations like mission hospitals

50 million dollars would give every lga standard hospital.. Tho not free but standard

The remaining 150 million would be given to people who want to set up factories in specific areas of the economy which my state has comparative advantage with certain conditions

Minimum job creation, minimum wage for staffs

This would boast GDP, increase recent remove the Borden of debt servicing from me the state
Your imagination is good but how are sure the outcome will be just as you've predicted or according to your wish. Lol, in reality things doesn't work in Naija as you think:

First, those 50m to each LGA will be diverted and you'll later need EFCC help to be tracing them, Lol.

Second, about the 150m, you said " the remaining 150m would be giving to people who want to set up factories in specific area of the economy..." These one too is already lost I can assure you.How do you know people who really have genuine interest in really setting up factories? Remember, as human you can't even trust yourself 100%.

Lol, this was how I used to plan business in those days. If things work like that we'll all be billionaires now.

Economics should be made compulsory
Since your country is not generating much income that can cover everything and enhance development, as a president you balance things up by borrowing.

Borrowing is not bad but my emphasis is on corruption coz the borrowed money are looted by those in government and it doesn't achieve its purpose.
You don't need to study economics to know these basic things and being an economist doesn't guarantee your success as a president.

We just have potential but presently very poor
Do you think that with all the resources available Nigeria is a poor country?

I like numbers

You are generating 5 trillion,
debt servicing and recurrent expenditure is 8 trillion

You borrow 10 trillion which increase recurrent expenditure and debt servicing to 10 trillion

You use the borrowed money to build rails n road without corruption.... What next?

Egypt didn't build Suez Canal, I don't know what you have been reading and I don't know how the canal made it into this discussion because Nigeria was not even existing when this canal was built.
How much has Egypt made from it's new capital?
Yet if it is done in Nigeria today, you all will criticize it because you don't like the government just like you are all critîcizing the coastal highway.
The reason why Egypt is building a new capital as cited by El-sisi is to decongest Cairo and accommodate growing population, if that attempt is made in Nigeria to decongest Lagos today, you all will cry and cry but will praise Egypt for it.
Theres nothing wrong in dem building a new capital.Neither u nor i understand d economy of Egypt as we dont live there so making comments on their capital will jst be ignorant.
Bt u n i live in Nigeria n we will critisize Nigeria govt irrespective of whos in power if they attempt such.remeber, nigeria as broke as she is rite now is still spending heavy billions on religious travels.

No route can make 20% of their running cost not to talk about being profitable

Those trains are just loan wasted on feel good projects
If they build a rail line from Lagos to Onitsha, even if u put the price at 25k for economy class,it will be full every trip.
But wickedness and Igbophobia will not let them consider what is the business internal corridor in Nigeria

No wonder nigeria is like this
No where in the world did any government build rail with revenue. I dare you to mention any country that completely used revenue to build a railway (use Google)

Which resources do you have in comparative advantage?
Nigeria has a comparative advantage in various sectors:

human resources
petroleum
gas
palm oil
vegetable oil
cocoa
tyres
agricultural products
telecommunications
construction
manufacturing
fertilizers
other natural resources, mined and stolen.

Why is Nigeria called a regional power? With such resources, how can you call Nigeria a poor country?

You are the one who is not getting me

So for you the only thing you can use loan for is infrastructure?

You don't know how to use loan to increase revenue? By investing in your people?
What do you mean investing in your people?

Pls give me a hypothetical/practical breakdown on how you'll investing in people after accessing a loan..

I live in Abuja,hw many buses load fro and fro Lagos?
It doesn’t even come close to 1/10 of those loading to Onitsha.
Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority said 65% of the containers from abroad end up in the SE.
Anywhere you are in Nigeria (except for the 6 SW states) there are more buses loading Onitsha than Lagos at a ratio of up to 10 to 1.
To bring a container to Onitsha from Lagos currently costs 1.5 million naira in transport.
Do you know hw much a cheaper means of transport like rail to Onitsha will affect the prices of goods?
I know you know these things but you might be one of the people wey no wan use ear hear Igbo.
Apart from the few people stealing govt money in Abuja, what is even happening there?

If u have comprehension issues, u shouldn't be making comments online.
Egypt is misbehaving by building infrastructures?
You either get private individuals to build your infrastructures or take loans, if you say Egypt is misbehaving then I wonder what u have upstairs.

I don't have an idea as to what Nigeria is spending on religious travels.
If Nigeria is brókè, then Egypt is brókè.
What you will praise other countries for doing, you will critîcizè your own for doing so because the govt is not your choice, it's simple to understand.
I can comment on Egypt's economy because I take my time study economies of other countries.

The government won't come and flush a public toilet, it is Nigerians who should do that which they don't do.
The government won't come and turn off a wall socket in a public place that the average Nigerian will use and leave it without turning it off.
The government won't throw your dirt into the bin after it has provided a bin.
Maintenance culture is a Nigerian issue but are always comfortable bIaming góverñment for everything.
