Justice Sector Reforms: Lagos To Be A Safe Haven For Investments - Sanwo-Olu by Chinkoalhaji34(op): 2:42am On May 28, 2024
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state has reiterated his commitment to make the state a safe haven for investments through the reform of the justice sector.

Speaking on Monday at the opening ceremony of the Justice Reform Summit, themed “Enhancing The Administration of Justice For Economic Growth, Investment Protection and Security in Lagos State,” the governor noted that Lagos need a stronger justice system to attract more investment.

“We are planning to make Lagos an international financial center.
We want to make Lagos the choice destination for investment and a safe haven for investment worldwide. But for us to do that, we need a strong judicial system for that to exist because that will be one of the strongest points that investors will be looking for. That will be one of the strongest protections that will be required and will be needed,” he said
.

Drawing lessons from Singapore which he said have been able to revolutionise its justice system to attract global investments, the Governor acknowledged that Lagos has made significant milestones in justice sector reforms but needs to do more.

He said: “We cannot sit back and expect that because we are the best in our country, that equates us to being one of the best in the world. Singapore has less than 6 million population today, and we are 24 million. They don’t have two heads.

‘They don’t have the kind of minds and strength that we have in this state and in this country. So the question is, what is wrong with us? There is no nation that wants to end its brief anywhere, and doesn’t have a rule of law as one of the beacons of deciding how it engages.

“We said that we’re the commercial economic center. It’s because it’s been built by people. But we cannot sit back and hope that that is the best of what we can do. We must do more.”

The Governor also hinted that more judges will soon be appointed in the state to cope with the increasing number of cases in the court dockets.

In his welcome address, Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN, said that to transform the justice sector and everything connected to it, stakeholders must safeguard the rule of law and promote access to justice.

He said that the state is working towards reforming some of its laws to engender economic growth and developments.

Invest in Lagos at your risk. Take what he is saying with a pinch of salt. How many Court judgments has Lagos State Government obeyed? A question that one should ruminate on before proceeding to invest on any physical assest. Landmark beachfront in Victoria Island has been destroyed for no reason; has he been compensated? No. Seeing how that demolition went is enough caveat for potential investors. Go to Maryland, you'll never believe that 2 filling stations were standing tall there some years back. Lagos State Government hijacked the filling station with Mr Biggs despite the court judgments on the land.

Same lagos you guys wake up and demolish properties as you deem fit?

Buildings you couldn't stop at its early stage since you know it's unapproved like you always claim...

Invest in Lagos at your own peril.

Na vendetta dem go use finish you.

In the East, the dictator Peter mba did something similar but he's shooting himself ok the leg.

I knew how long it took Sullivan to demolish old part to change its face but the business owners were adequately compensated and given a space in new market to stay pending the completion of the old park.

But MBA thinks himself a god and behaves like Sanwo Olu and co who are on vendetta.

It's Tinubu that started this abero nonsense when he was governor of Lagos. Back then, when people report abero to him, he will ask you, "Eh I know. Do you have any jobs to give these boys?" when you answer No, he will then say, "eh, what do you want me to do with them? Just leave them and go". Police will release them.
That's how ageros started increasing in their violence and numbers.
Tinubu started it.

What investors need is transparency.
Currently if you ask someone to invest in Lagos real estate they will refuse because their is no transparency.
No one rakes up NGN200Million to go and buy illegal land or house. But people invest these money legally and in 5years the investment is declared illegal.

They should also put stringent measures on land sales.

Because a lot of people, cutting across all tribe in Nigeria has lost properties worth billions, and the Igbos being highest losers when it comes to demolition.
