NULGE PRESIDENT HAILS EKITI STATE, TWO OTHERS ON LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTONOMY

The President of National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Ambali Olatunji has commended Ekiti State Government for adhering to the constitutional provision of local government autonomy in the state.

Speaking on Channels Television’s programme, The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Comrade Olatunji, who criticised state governments for flouting the local government autonomy law, however cited Ekiti State as one of the three states that have followed the due process for local government autonomy.

He identified Rivers and Jigawa as two other states that have also complied with the constitutional provision.
The NULGE President who flayed what he described as flagrant disregard for the local government autonomy, by state government, alleged that many states have continued to deny the third tier of government democratic governance through the use of Caretaker committees or sole administrator as against elected officials, adding that many of them have also not complied with the financial independence aspect of the autonomy, through unwholesome practices that slow down growth and development at the third tier government.

When asked by the moderator to mention names of the states that are disregarding the local government autonomy law and who are in the habit of crediting and withdrawing money from the local government account, Comrade Olatunji said only the three states- Ekiti, Jigawa and Riverrs have complied with the law.

“Only three states are complying “mutantis mutandis with the provisions of the constitution -Ekiti, Jigawa and Rivers. These are the states that stand above board in the issue of local government autonomy.”, he added.
Speaking further, the NULGE President said

LGAs don't deserve any autonomy in Nigeria. You want to grant autonomy to LGA chairmen who don't even live in their domain? Imagine a state governor living in his FCT liaison office. Very funny.

Those LGA chairmen are even worse than governors; they just don't have that privilege yet. All parts of states fall into an LGA and governors should directly address issues that matter to them.

What I would rather appeal is that governors should conduct transparent LGA elections and allow the wishes of the people to reflect on the ballot. Alternatively, enact a law that compels all LGA chairmen to live in the domain they man or be impeached.

You dnt know what they called democracy.

Going by what you said, president should also be doing exactly to state govt.

If the state actors are leaving above the power given them, it means we are not ready for development yet

There is no sense in this write up. So now that the governors have all the monies ment for the local government is the system working? You can as well say we don't need state autonomy since all the states are in Nigeria, the president should handle all their affairs.

I am not sure this NULGE President understands what it means by LGA autonomy if he is even naming Rivers State as part of those given to it.
Please let those in Ekiti and Jigawa come and confirm this story.....

As far as Rivers State is concerned it's a complete NO, NO.

Did the packaged thief and fraud like their fake electronics strangulate the LGs under his rule?
YES!

The fake and hypocritical holier than thou legend didn't conduct any Local government election until few months to the end of his tenure. He was just appointing LG chairmen like his commissioners!

I don't share my thoughts to please anyone; I speak up!

BTW, you are drawing two different analogies. At least governors live in their states. You need to live within your domain to understand what your people feel and go through every day. You cannot be an LGA chairman and live in the state capital, no!

The only way LGA autonomy will work is for LGA chairmen to live in their domains and must send monthly reports of what they did with their allocations to the EFCC. I know it won't make any sense to you because you people emotionally encourage leadership rascality.

that is happening because people don't focus on local government chairmen because the governor has rendered them powerless and useless.

If local government is powerful, people will take the election more seriously and will elect those who stay in their domain not Abuja.

Governors will not be staying in their states to if they are as powerless and useless as local government chairmen.

So he is right, you post makes no sense.
