Why Is Food Expensive In Nigeria? by Onlinefarmstore(op): 2:37pm On May 28, 2024
It's no longer news that the common man in Nigeria can't eat again!

Simply put, food is luxury and no affordable to the poor.

Basic food commodities such as beans (usually classified as poor man's food is now out of the reach of the poor man).

For example, never in my life have been crossed 100k, but ladies and gentlemen beans is 112k in brono, this was Sam beans that was sold for 10k just little under 2years before.

The question bags, why is food expensive in Nigeria?

I'm the pass 6 months we have spent time travelling 22 northen states and 6 countries that supply Nigeria agricultural goods and meet with more than 200,000 farmers and this are some of our experience why foods are expensive in Nigeria.

1. High rate of Agricultural Inputs.

I'm our stories for the BBC, we sat down with them and explained how high rate of Agricultural inputs is pushing the small scale farmers out of business, remember they account for 80% of Nigeria out puts, and if a farmer buys fertilizer for 50,000 as against 10k how will they survive, do you know that agro chemicals have shot up by more than 300% in cost?

Poor Infastructures:

Do you know that due to bad roads, a good percentage of agricultural produce are wasted.

We sat with the cattle dealers association last week in Bauchi, and they told us that for every 100 cattles sent, they lose 10 due to shocks from the bad road and delays caused by it.

This is also evident in the stories of those that transport yams from Benue through Taraba to Abuja, the road is bad in Ibi LGA, and from the Shandam axis (our trip to that axis 1 month ago confrims it), making yams dealers lose yams to the water and lives.

Re: Why Is Food Expensive In Nigeria? by Onlinefarmstore(op): 2:48pm On May 28, 2024
Multiple Taxation:

Do you know that a trailer form maiduguri to Aba spends more than 500k on settlement (road money), which is causing and increased cost of food items.

From Benue to Abuja one spends more than 50,000 as extra cost to send a J5 bus to yams, which is resulting in the extra cost to the buyers.

High cost of feeding is caused by mirrored taxes dealers has to pay and resulting in multiple taxation along this route which is common in the SS and SE route of the country inclusive of Benue, Kogi and Kwara state.

And one Minister was on TV reading out plenty jargons of numbers of seedlings, fertilisers and chemicals they have distributed. Whereas these things are handed over to middlemen who are their friends and cronies who in turn sell them at exorbitant prices and give back returns..

We forgot is a chain reaction.... so we let the greedy ones In us determine and control the market.

Now the whole nation is in hyper inflation and nothing the government can do about it.

Do you know so many people are rushing to plant melon and cassava because of the prices in the market. These are people who hardly consume cassava o. So what happens when cassava floods the market during harvest time?

Insecurity plus farmers are paying multiple taxes to bandits, high cost of transportation as a result of the subsidy removal, High exchange rate.

PS: The idiot talking about greed in the comments, you expect traders to clear goods at 1500+ to sell at peanuts to you or the driver that bought fuel at 880 per litre to transport foodstuffs to charge buyers of those foodstuffs biscuits because he loves Nigeria

Food is expensive in Nigeria because Nigeria is consuming more food than it's producing
Re: Why Is Food Expensive In Nigeria? by iamphilips(m): 12:42am On May 29, 2024
The earlier we find solutions to this the better, we as individuals and Government have roles to play within transit routes.

I expect some sort of Technological advancement in food preservation and storage, we have thousands of Students and graduates within different fields of agriculture.... We need results!!!

Please this needs to hit front page

Re: Why Is Food Expensive In Nigeria? by epainos:
The majority of the reasons you mentioned are not what is causing food to be expensive in Nigeria. Although the infrastructure has always been subpar, we continue to receive low-cost food. So you are expecting the government to not tell you to pay taxes. Go to the United Kingdom and the United States and pay no taxes. Lol. Una just wants free things. I am not saying they should overtax citizens, but Nigerians do not pay taxes. Pay your tax. Settlements made while traveling are not taxes; they are plainly exploitation, which is a fraud. However, the amount is minimal and should not increase the cost of food. Be realistic.

The real reason food is expensive is because of forex. Period. Our economy relies on the dollar. Inflation affects all aspects of the economy, including food production.

Furthermore, the usual seasonal glut due to a lack of infrastructure and well-organized marketplaces will continue to have a negative impact. This issue has been there for a long time. I believe that the government can only solve it if the private sector enters the industry. This can happen only when the economy is good. So, it is still back to the same thing.

Meanwhile, you should discuss the positive things that are happening right now. We should be grateful for good road connectivity the government is presently implementing throughout the country. Poor road networking has always been a major issue, and they are gradually addressing it. If we continue at this rate, we will be able to solve the problem in about ten years, allowing our railways and waterways to be more efficient as well.

Overall, the world is going through a difficult time. It is not affecting Nigeria only. Rather, now is the time and opportunity for us to correct any mistakes we have made. One of the errors is what this OP still wants. Subsidy and "awoof" must be reduced to the minimal level that is the most optimized. Your parents and grandparents are the ones who put you in this mess because they loved "awoof." And any small payment...na aluta. The government kept borrowing too to maintain that "awoof" thing. And then, politicians too kept on stealing... even they are still stealing till date. Lol. Anyway, that "awoof" thing must stop.

The government is meant to make policies and not pay for everything. Government cannot keep buying you seeds, buying gasoline for you to power your irrigation, buy you nutrients, etc. These are the solutions OP wants... and forget it. Let us all be responsible, at least for the next generations coming. Let us pay the price our useless parents and grandparents refused to pay. Those ones are just useless. Extremely useless set of generations. They had it all free... and they still destroyed it all. A very useless generation.

Go and face your senators and house of rep...mount pressure on them so the government can be forced to implement good policies. Na only the executive arms Nigerians cry about...meanwhile, the legislative arm is where we should really work on because that is where laws are signed. Also, we need to make sure we get a good judiciary.

OP, Naija problems pass wetin you wrote. In fact, I will score you zero over a hundred for the rubbish analysis. Lol. Unfortunately, the way you reason is how millions of Naija reason, and this is why we aren't making progress. Most of you don't understand the real issues that need to be addressed. Instead, na "awoof" you want.

Awoof go bend una finally. Stop looking for awoof. Ask people who understand the real issues that need to be addressed and join the wagon of the right cause.

Good luck!
Re: Why Is Food Expensive In Nigeria? by Teetee777: 4:35pm On May 29, 2024
All these problems you listed have been there before, and the cost of foodstuff didn't skyrocket like this. The cause of the high cost of foodstuff is subsidy removal and floating of dollars, don't let us deceive ourselves.
Bad roads have been there b4 subsidy removal and floating of the dollar

Double taxation has been there before subsidy removal & floating of the dollar

Insecurities have been there before subsidy removal. and floating of the dollar

Greedy the people have been there b4 subsidy removal and floating of the dollar

Therefore, subsidy removal and floating of dollars caused high costs of foodstuff.

They told us that the neighboring countries are benefiting from the low cost of petrol and they decided to remove the subsidy but now go to Niger Republic/Kastina border, you will see people smuggling petrol to the niger republic, so what is the excess of removing subsidy at first instance.

The problem with humans is "greediness." Why? If you look at this situation, this is like Joseph of the BibLe. Even... Isaac. How? You make it big during farmine.

You will all make it big. But no way. These people will bring their madness. Consultants will come and dupe newbies. Lol. However, it is very easy to make money during this time. I follow the news every day, and I knew tomatoes would be in high demand at this time. In fact, it will not come down till next year. What stops farmers from coming together. 15 people should fix 1 ha and take 1 plot each. It can be done, but these people will NEVER make it work.

If you see the situation in Nigeria as a negative, it is a positive for me because we are cashing out steadily and heavily. Lol.

What is stopping you from getting together and buying a carton of broilers? Then share it 5 broilers each. And then, they keep buying like every 2 weeks. That will be 5 broilers for the family every 2 weeks.

What stops them from buying layers and buying feed together to reduce the cost. 5 layers per family give 25 eggs per week. Does this not make sense?

What is preventing them from having home gardens, and those who do not have backyards should help those who do.

What is stopping you from starting a tomato farm? It can be funded by ten to fifty people. And they process the tomatoes into pastes. They can have 6 months to 12 months supply.

There are so many ways to get this job done, but people are too greedy and selfish. This life is simple. 100 people can come together and live without Tinubu and APC. But guess what? They will fight. Someone among them always have a bad idea inside. Someone among them will always cause a fight. They must destroy collaboration. The evil in them will not allow them to come together. It is a curse. A very big one.

This is the problem individuals have in Naija. This is the problem our parents and grandparents refused to solve. We are still battling this demon. It is this evil that will wreck Naija. Believe me...the human mind is desperately wicked, so says the Bible. Who can search it?

Guys....if you can just stay together....if you can work together, Naija will not happen to you. I rather see a light at the end of the tunnel here.

I have created groups like this in the past. I have led WhatsApp and telegram groups of capable farmers. I have piloted many programs. I know the evil in humans.

Right now, my focus is sustainability. Environmental sustainability, green energy, blue economy, carbon sequence and cycle, micro-biology, ecology, and above all....wellness.

Wellness is my top priority at this moment. My vision is to create a network of Nigerians who want to live sustainable life and adopt longetivity. We will live above 100 years in good health. This group of people will make an impact in this world before answering the call of God to rest at the right time. No cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. We will remove them from our life because we know that if we can clean the food we eat, we have solved 80% of the wahala. The rest na exercising and spirituality.

We aren't focused on looting public funds cos we are above that. We are moving forward to make good lives for ourselves instead of depending on Nigeria. Nigeria will never happen to us. Never. We will live good life in it. Say wetin na?

Na who no wan live better life dey complain about the economy. We are tapping into the world economy. I have written a lot about that. Go read my threads. Stay healthy......get rich with peace of mind.

I eat steadily good food. Wetin concern me? Na you dey shout "ebi n pa wa". Lol. Na that hunger go kill ya.

No flooding of the markets will occur at any time.
Nigeria has excess population that will always make any supply look inadequate.
Besides, there will be no way everyone will be a farmer; so that situation of supply far exceeding demand won't arise

Re: Why Is Food Expensive In Nigeria? by nicedayontop:
In my own opinion, increase in the prices of food crops is a global issue and is not perculiar to nigeria alone. Nigerian farmers are exporting their crops to earn higher profits thereby resulting to low supply/scarcity in nigerian markets. The major issue is that the purchasing power in nigeria is too low that is why we think that the prices are too expensive. The minimum wage in nigeria is equivalent to just $50 per month which cannot sustain a person for a week even in rwanda. Only the politicians are having adequate income/high purchasing power.
