hegelian:It takes two to tango my friend. We are all bigots in this country, anyone saying otherwise is just a coward that won’t admit to his act. However, even if you are the worst of bigot, when you sing this new national anthem, you will always feel the wave of conscience running through your heart, it will be keep telling you that tho tribes and tongue differ, we must stand in brotherhood. Now tell me, how does this new national anthem affect your life negatively? |

LegendHero:How? That song was rejected by the Yorubas the first moment it was launched in 1960. So how does it make sense for a Yoruba president to bring it back. More importantly, majority of those who composed the real anthem are Yorubas and it was signed by a Yoruba president. How do you think it looks to the rest of the country that their efforts is just trashed like that in favor of a colonialist? The lyrics are not better in any way than the real one. The second line says "our own dear native land" when the writer is not even a native of Nigeria. How is that sensible in terms of lyrics? The writer was a lady and she was talking of brotherhood. It makes no sense!! |

The funny thing is that those who don't know the former Anthem go still get the larger voice to condemn the newly adopted one. I am indifferent though. |
| Re: Video Of Tinubu & National Assembly Members Singing The New Anthem (Video) by Kukutente23: 10:25pm On May 29, 2024 |
MT:It's not. The song starts with a mispronouncuation of Nigeria. Nigeria is 3 syllables Nai-ji-ria while the song turns it into four (Nai-ji-ri-a). I don't know any anthem anywhere in the world that pronounces the country's name wrongly. I suspect it's deliberate since the composer knows he'll never have to sing it afterwards. It's a disgrace!! |
| Re: Video Of Tinubu & National Assembly Members Singing The New Anthem (Video) by Kukutente23: 10:29pm On May 29, 2024 |
DeepSight:I tell you. It's so annoying how Tinubu supporters are trying to tie merit to the nonsense song. The song sounds like an Anglicised hymn. Check "Come my brethren" hymn. It sounds almost alike!! Arise o' Compatriots is better in terms of lyrics and composition. Tinubu has always acted as if he knows better than everyone else when events have shown he doesn't know jack!! The fact is he already left Nigeria before Arise o' Compatriots was launched so he's just sticking with what he knows and not any merit. Moreso when it was launched by no less a person than OBJ |

Kukutente23:But it still passed as the national anthem. Yoruba is not the only tribe in Nigeria. So how does it make sense for a Yoruba president to bring it back. You’re confused yourself. The national anthem is not a Yoruba agenda when OBJ signed it, it was more of a Nigeria agenda. No one cares if it was a Yoruba that compose it, what is true is that OBJ the then head of state thought we should have a new anthem because the old anthem seems like a relics of the colonizers. I don’t know why Tinubu in his knowledge think it’s best to send an executive bill to change it. I saw some people saying it was indeed part of the recommendation of the confab report to revert back to the old anthem. Personally, if I am the president, I won’t change the anthem. But Tinubu has done it with the NASS approving it. Why don’t you guys stop him before signing it or stop NASS from passing it? Why complaining now? The lyrics are not better in any way than the real one. The second line says "our own dear native land" when the writer is not even a native of Nigeria. How is that sensible in terms of lyrics? The writer was a lady and she was talking of brotherhood. It makes no sense!!The lyrics are way better than the “Arise o compatriot”. It might be subjective inference, but I think it is better because the Nigeria we hail thee anthem align more with what Nigeria is and the constituents. @the bolded, the writer wrote it for Nigeria and Nigerians. That was why it was our own dear native land. In that stanza, they are stalking about Nigeria. Stop typing for typing sake, even the name Nigeria was given by the Brits. There was once a period where some rep proposed to change the name Nigeria to “UAR”. It is still the same Nigerians that complained they don’t want changes. So if you don’t want to change the name Nigeria given by your colonial master, why complain when the anthem was changed to the 1960 own? Personally, I am indifferent to the new national anthem. If I am the president, I won’t change it. But since he changed it already, no need wasting time on this. |

LegendHero:You're simply confusing yourself. You are always here posing as pro-Yoruba and even claimed to be a Yoruba patriot. But here's a subject matter that the Western region was strongly against and You're suddenly wobbling and you suddenly remember Nigeria is not only Yoruba. I think your Yoruba patriotism is fickle. Obj changed the anthem because that was something he and a critical segment of the country who were the Yorubas agreed on. There were other things he could have changed if it was just about relics of colonialism chief of which is the name Nigeria. Another was Eko being called Lagos. Both were not on any agenda then so it never got to the front burner. Restructuring is also largely a Yoruba agenda but I notice how it has taken back saddle once your man got the seat. The writer wrote it for Nigeria but not for Nigerians. She never consulted Nigerians neither did Nigeria ask her for an anthem. She wrote the anthem just as you'll name your baby without consulting with the baby. It is a sign of poor lyricism to lay claim to a fallacy in such way as it was done in that second line. It shows the British were thinking they've created a native land for some rudderless people and they now have to make them own the identity. Nigeria is not anybody's native land. You're either Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa etc. Those are the tribes native to the land called Nigeria. Nigeria is a British creation and late Awolowo called it a mere geographical expression and he was darn right. No one can be a native of a mere geographical expression. Coming to this present day. Are Nigerians standing in brotherhood? Is it only tribe and tongue that differ in Nigeria? What about religion? The writer showed a poor grasp of the peculiarities of Nigeria. The old anthem was a misnomer. The first line even pronounced Nigeria wrongly by adding an extra syllable to the name!! |

Kukutente23:I can’t even make sense of anything you’re talking about. Western region were against lot of things that other Nigerian region still proceeded to do either ways. So how exactly does a national anthem adopted by Nigeria become a WR agenda because Obasanjo passed it? Did Obasanjo even look like someone pro-Western or pro-Yoruba to you to start with? No Yoruba sat with OBJ and told him to change the national anthem. Stop saying nonsense. OBJ that won’t even handle then mantle to Awolowo and frustrated his effort in the rigged 1979 election. Has he ever told you he was at anytime a pro-Yoruba? The most ridiculous thing I ever heard is someone saying Obasanjo did something for Yoruba sake. Same Obasanjo of 1979 or another one? The rest of your point is disjointed and I can’t make sense of it. So because there are multiple things that differ, the writer should list 500 differing things in the anthem so it can be up to 500 lines to please you or what? @the bolded, there was a call in 1960 for people to compete for a new national anthem. It was open to all people either Nigerian or non-Nigerian, so quit the nonsense lies that the woman just wrote it out of the blues. Over 3000 entries were received even for the music to the anthem alone.
